I learned how to knit when I was in my early 20s, living in the East Village of New York City. It was just when knitting was getting cool again, long before the days of Ravelry, and way before there were things like knitting subscription boxes.
I’d knit on the subway on the way to work. I’d knit in coffeeshops all around the city. I’d knit sitting at Yaffa drinking a chai latte and people watching.
Back then, the only place to get good yarn was at my local yarn shop. These days, there’s Ravelry for patterns and Etsy and lots of local shops for yarn and notions and YouTube for when you’re learn ..read more

Last I checked, it was nowhere near Halloween. And, while Michaels and other craft stores are known for stocking supplies on the early side so you can decorate and craft in time for the holiday, it’s… April. A bit early for code orange. Still, Michaels Nevermore collection is spooky AF.
If you love Halloween year-round, the new Nevermore decor by Ashland can definitely help you transform your home to match your Dark Academia aesthetic. They also work for witchy gifts if you need one of those.
So, here are some of my favorite items from Michaels’ reportedly Edgar Allen Poe-inspired product line ..read more

If you’ve ever spotted a moon gate on Pinterest or Instagram and desired to have one in your witchy garden, I hear you. These circular portals feel like enchanted portals to another world.
Even if that “other world” isn’t Stargate and is just the other side of your backyard. Rooted in Chinese garden design, these archways do more than frame a view. Moon gates symbolize the Full Moon, a celestial object important both to witches and to the Chinese calendar.
Moon gates are generally constructed from stone, wood, plants, or brick, though you’ll sometimes find them made from metal or other materia ..read more

When it comes to whether or not a spell will work, there are a number of factors at play. Are you focused on your intention? Can you visualize your outcome? Can you stop doubt from creeping in?
But, one that you might not have considered is: Are you working with planetary magick?
If you want your spell or intention to have the best shot of success, I highly recommend you work with the planets. Luckily, there’s an app for this to make it easy.
What Is Planetary Magick?
Planetary Magick is when you harness the power of the planets to give your spell extra power. Sal Santoro, a practicing witch a ..read more

The 12 houses in astrology essentially represent 12 different areas, topics, or matters in your life. If your ruling planet describes “what,” and your zodiac sign describes “how,” your astrological house describes “where.”
When a planet is placed in a house, the house describes where in a person’s life that the planet’s impact is most active or expressed. As complicated as this may sound, it’s actually very simple, especially if you think of the houses as places planets visit.
Does Each Birth Chart Have All Astrological Houses?
Yes. Every birth chart has all 12 astrological houses. Alth ..read more

I love a good meme. And, I often find myself laughing (and sometimes, cackling) at some of the witchy memes I see all over Facebook and Instagram. And, not just around Halloween.
The humor heroes behind the memes I’ve seen understand how to craft relatable memes that resonate if you’ve ever dabbled in witchcraft (or know someone who has).
From blunt tarot card readings telling you what you don’t want (but need) to hear to crows going off about how we all love sticks, here are some of my favorite memes that I think all of you witches, magicians, and tarot readers will appreciate.

In the Rider-Waite tarot, the Magician is card 1 in the Major Arcana. He is the first character the Fool meets on his journey. The Magician is positioned at the center of the card and stands before a table adorned with the symbols of the tarot: a wand, cup, sword, and a pentacle. These tools represent the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth.

The Wheel of the Year is a symbol represents the 8 festivals important to many pagans, Wiccans, and witches. These holidays — knows as Sabbats — follow a nature-based calendar and include four solar festivals and four seasonal festivals set in between them.
Because solstices and equinoxes are tied to exact astronomical moments, the holidays shift slightly from year-to-year. There is a celebration about every six weeks, so there’s always something to look forward to! At the end of this post, I’ve included the Wheel of the Year dates for 2024 and other years.
If you choose to celebrate the fest ..read more

The Yule Cat makes its rounds across Iceland each year on Christmas Eve, stalking through snowy winter streets, towering above houses and peering into frosty windows. It searches out those without new socks or scarves amongst their Christmas gifts, and then, as punishment, devours them whole.
This freaky piece of folklore once served as a warning to those who would shirk their duties and leave more work for others over the holidays. Keep reading to discover more about the Yule Cat and its origins.
