Decision to fire Barry Trotz could haunt Islanders for years to come: Arnold

As I made my way to Yankee Stadium, a pair of men sat down in the row in front of me on the Long Island Rail Road. One of them, presumably a New York Islanders fan, had just learned that the team had let go of head coach Barry Trotz [1] some 20-odd minutes earlier. In a short exchange with his friend, it was safe to say that he was none too happy about the decision.  It was easy to imagine similar scenes playing out in LIRR cars and delis across Long Island on Monday. The franchise had just made its most shocking coaching change since Mike Milbury fired rising coaching star Peter Laviolet ..read more

The Jets shored up their offensive depth on Monday by signing wide receiver Calvin Jackson Jr. and lineman Derrick Kelly — two players who stood out during preseason tryouts in past weeks.  The two players participated in rookie minicamp for Gang Green, and were awarded NFL contacts for the coming season, team beat writer Ethan Greenberg reported. [1] Jackson Jr. is the son of Calvin Jackson Sr., who was a defensive back standout in college at Auburn, and who spent 5 years with the Miami Dolphins after entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 1994. The elder Jackson died in 2021 ..read more

A video circulating on Twitter [1] seemed to show a New York City Fire Department member heckling pro-abortion protestors on May 7, however, FDNY officials have responded, denying that the individual was in any way affiliated with the FDNY.  The video, posted by Joshua Potash on the social media app, depicts a group of men standing on the steps of the Basilica of Old St Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan shouting across the street to protestors. At least one individual appears to be wearing clothing with an FDNY logo. “A video circulating from a protest in Manhattan over the weekend shows a ..read more

‘Bans will only stop safe abortions’: AG James announces legislation to protect abortion access in New York and help out-of-state women obtain it

State Attorney General Letitia James made clear Monday that the only thing a possible Supreme Court reversal of the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling would do is stop safe abortions — and endanger women's lives. "The reality of the situation is that bans will not stop abortions. Bans will only stop safe abortion, and that is why we are here today to provide safe abortion access," James said Monday during a press conference announcing new legislation to expand abortion access for low-income New Yorkers while also providing funding for those from banned states seeking abortions in New York.  ..read more

Los Angeles Lakers thought about trading for Kyrie Irving: Report
amNewYork – Politics

Was Kyrie Irving almost a Los Angeles Laker?  A new report suggested that it was something that the Lakers had internally considered pursuing this past season in an attempt to reunite LeBron James and Irving in Hollywood. The idea came about earlier in the year while Irving had been sidelined due to his unwillingness to get vaccinated, according to SNY's Ian Beagley [1].  While a deal never materialized, the idea was discussed by some inside the Lakers organization, the report stated. It was unknown if there had been any internal consensus on making a play to acquire Irving and at th ..read more
