This week, we took a deep dive into the Alabama Supreme Court ruling, what it could mean for the future of in vitro fertilization (IVF), and what it might mean for New Mexico. Last week, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled in a case that involved a fertility clinic and some frozen embryos. These embryos were dropped and then had to be rendered non-viable. The couple who couldn’t use these embryos sued the clinic. They sued not just for breaking their property but also for wrongful death. This case made its way through the lower courts and ended up in the Alabama Supreme Court. With a seven (7) to t ..read more

by ProgressNow NM

Sine Die Deets New Mexico just wrapped up another 30-day state legislative session and as usual, there was some good, some meh, and some ugly (particularly from the mouths of the GOP). As the last unpaid legislature in the nation, our legislative sessions in which we get to pass bills critical to our health, safety, and ability to thrive are limited mostly to odd years sessions where we have a whopping 60 days to get bills through both chambers and to the governor’s desk. In even years, like this one, the 30 day session consists primarily of passing the state budget. The only bills that get a ..read more

Standing in Solidarity: A Perspective on the Juan de Oñate monument Shooting in Española, New Mexico
ProgressNow New Mexico
by Charlotte Madueno

On September 28, community members gathered peacefully to celebrate the postponement of the re-installment of the Juan de Oñate monument to the public space outside the Española Municipal Complex. That peace was shattered when Ryan Martinez, an election denying conspiracy theorist in a MAGA hat, pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot (Link to news story here) Indigenous activist Jacob Johns in the stomach. To understand why the Oñate statue is causing such conflict in New Mexico, we must first understand the past.  Juan de Oñate was a Spanish conquistador who played a significant ro ..read more

After failing in NMleg, Gov moves Outdoor Division anyway
ProgressNow New Mexico
by Lucas Herndon

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s administration recently signed off on a plan to move the Outdoor Recreation Division from its home at the Economic Development Department to the Tourism Department, despite the fact that such a move was resoundingly rejected by a bipartisan committee earlier this year. In fact, even Republican Representative Alan Martinez said at the time of the hearing during the legislative session, “I don’t understand how promoting stewardship and preservation of New Mexico’s unique environment, enhancing public health, outdoor recreation assets… I don’t understand how this ..read more

New ads target NM Governor for lack of climate action
ProgressNow New Mexico
by Lucas Herndon
3M ago
ProgressNow New Mexico launched a new series of digital advertisements this week to call attention to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s vetoes of climate-policy related bills earlier this year. The move comes after the governor appeared on a national energy summit stage and seemed to directly contradict herself when asked why she vetoed the climate action bills.  “The Governor campaigned on being a climate leader. In her first term we saw her follow through on taking bold action around methane emissions and some other issues, but vetoing the few small climate related bills that the legisl ..read more

NM hires oil & gas lobbyist to lead transition from oil & gas!
ProgressNow New Mexico
by Lucas Herndon

Last year New Mexico’s Economic Development Department (EDD) sent out an official Request for Proposal (RFP) to hire a contractor to come up with concrete steps to move the state away from our dependence on oil and gas revenue. They hired a notorious oil and gas lobbyist to do that work. The point of hiring a contractor was, according to the language in the RFP, “to outline a concrete action plan for economic diversification away from the state’s current dependence on the oil and gas, retail, and public sectors over 20 years that shall include legislative and infrastructure strategies.” This i ..read more
