U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., who was admitted to the hospital in early April following a “cardiac episode” stemming from complications tied to his diabetes, died Wednesday. He was 65. A native of Newark, Payne (D-10th Dist.) was first elected to represent New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District in 2012, succeeding his father in the post. He also has served on the city council in Newark and as a freeholder in Essex County. Gov. Phil Murphy said he was deeply saddened, and called Payne his friend and a steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey. “With his signature bowtie, big heart and ten ..read more

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association, in an effort to reframe the fight, said the concerns with the proposed Corporate Transit Fee — a 2.5% tax on the state’s largest companies to pay for New Jersey Transit — go far beyond those large companies. In a message delivered by a group of New Jersey business leaders at NJBIA headquarters in Trenton on Tuesday, leaders said the biggest threat is not legacy companies leaving, but that the slow drip of companies already making workforce, research and facility investments in other states will turn into a torrent. The event was part of NJBIA ..read more

Fair share: Monmouth Poll shows those in South Jersey feel they come up short

Pay your “fair share.” It’s the vague request/demand that so many will make when they essentially want big business and the wealthiest to pay for everything. When it comes to getting your fair share, people are more specific. At least, that appears to be the case from the latest Monmouth University Poll, released Tuesday morning. The poll found that South Jersey residents felt most overlooked when it comes to getting state resources — at least compared with those living in Central and North Jersey. Corporate Transit Fee ball is now in Legislature’s court

It has been over six weeks since Gov. Phil Murphy proposed a highly punitive business tax increase on the state’s largest companies in his fiscal 2025 state budget. Essentially, he is saying New Jersey should replace the temporary 2.5% Corporate Business Tax surcharge that expired at the end of 2023, and repackage it as a Corporate Transit Fee. This tax hike would affect New Jersey’s largest job creators, tax revenue producers and philanthropic givers — in a very bad way, as would the “Buck a Truck” proposal, which is an unnecessary nuisance tax on the state’s burgeoning logistics industry. The push — and the need — for statewide participation in AI Hub from business community

The state’s well-chronicled history of innovation — along with Princeton University’s equally impressive connection to major computer science advances — made New Jersey and its premier university the only logical place to create an AI Hub on the East Coast. But, at the first NJAI Summit on Thursday at Princeton, President Chris Eisgruber made it clear that the school isn’t looking to go it alone. “My message, when I spoke to the other presidents of the colleges and universities here in New Jersey is, if this succeeds, it succeeds with all of us coming together,” he said. “We want this to be bo ..read more
