75% L’Acadie Blanc / 17% Riesling / 8% Muscat/ 12.5% alcohol This impressive Tidal Bay was tasted shortly after bottling. It will only get better over the next few months. The strong acidity and multitude of expressive flavours will allow it to age and integrate over the next two or three years. I tasted over three days and discreet changes evolved. Aromas of lemon curd, barley candy, coconut, a hint soapy, and a touch of slate. With some air, slate gave way to river stone and floral aromas of orange muscat dessert wine appeared. On day three, orange toned down to citrus orange, minerally lem ..read more

The legendary Grange story starts in 1950 when Penfolds sent their winemaker, Max Schubert, to Spain to research fortified winemaking. Being a lover of red still wine, Max took a side trip to Bordeaux, France where he was hit with a revelation, inspiring him to go home to South Australia and create a “great Australian red wine that would last for at least 20 years”. While producing the regular wines of the Penfolds portfolio, Max worked on the side to create his dream wine and in 1957 the executives at Penfolds tasted his first vintages, hated them and ordered him to stop the project. Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, Norte, Portugal A few times in life, we are offered a special tasting experience. Such was the case after a lovely end-of-season dinner with a friend who opened the cupboard and pulled a 1960 Ferreira Vintage Port. Being a sommelier at Fox Harb’r with such an extensive wine program and a respectable selection of vintage ports in our own cellar, I was humbled to have this shared with me. Ferreira Port House was established in 1751 in 300-year-old cellars of a convent, situated on the Douro River not far from Graham’s Port Lodge and Churchill’s Port. Close by ..read more

Schug Winery was founded 40 years ago when Walter Schug, a German-born Napa wine pioneer decided to leave his position as founding winemaker at the esteemed Joseph Phelps Vineyards. He emigrated to California from Assmanshausen, a Pinot Noir-growing region in the Rheingau. Although Schug Winery and Vineyards were created from a passion for Pinot Noir, they certainly rose to the occasion with their Chardonnay. The 2018 is a blend of Chardonnays harvested in five vineyards located in three regions of the Sonoma Coast, including the cool-climate Carneros. The appearance is shimmering gold w ..read more

Grosjean, Petite Arvine 2018

It is always exciting to explore an off-the-beaten-track wine and Petite Arvine fits the bill. This white grape only grows in Valais, Switzerland and Vallée d’Aoste DOC which has the highest elevated vineyards in Europe. Situated in the extreme northwest Italy just north of Piedmont and surrounded by the Alps. Because of such high elevation, Phylloxera never hit this region when the aphid destroyed most grape vines worldwide. Grosjean was a farming family raising cattle, chestnuts, and grapes to make wine for the family table. Their exceptional quality wine became recognized and the vine ..read more

NV L’ACADIE BLANC, CHARDONNAY JÕST VINEYARDS

JÕST VINEYARDS, located 20 minutes from our Fox Harb’r Resort on Nova Scotia’s North Shore is one of the original wineries in our province. If Nova Scotia has a signature grape, it is L’ACADIE BLANC. Hybridized in Ontario’s Niagara region, this varietal was brought to Nova Scotia by Domaine D’ Grand Pré and named “L’Acadie”.  It is probably the grape most experimented with; oaked-unoaked, created into sparkling wine, also dried, then made into a passito-style sweet wine!  With food, the still wine version can be substituted for Sauvignon Blanc or C ..read more

Tidal Bay is Nova Scotia’s first and only appellation for white wine. As a matter of fact, it is Canada’s only appellation wine! Of the 25 wineries in Nova Scotia, Fox Harb’r is the lucky thirteenth to produce a Tidal Bay. This vintage was created by Gina Haverstock, winemaker from our partners at Devonian Coast. Now that Fox Harb’r Resort is open for the 2019 season, the food and beverage team are reviewing different wines every Wine Wednesday. We tasted Fox Harb’r Tidal Bay shortly after its release and again this week to discover it is evolving and integrating in the bottle even over this ..read more

This 100% chenin blanc (in South Africa also known as steen) is from Swartland in the Western Cape’s coastal region of South Africa. Chenin blanc is native to The Loire, France, but there is more of it planted in South Africa than in The Loire. Painted Wolf Wines is named for the painted wolf, is another name for wild African carnivorous hunting dogs. They are an endangered species most easily recognized by patches of different colours on their bodies. Although predatory, they are very social and playful. Their home base hangout is in dens where they bond and relax. On the nose, we can s ..read more

Cabernet Franc, Vallée Loire

This interesting cabernet franc is raised on the hilltop of Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg in Loire’s Anjou-Saumur region. The wine is produced by Caves des Vignerons de Saumur, which is a co-op of more than three hundred growers and vintners. Bottles and barrels of wine are stored in endless underground caves, which are the result of limestone being quarried to build various Château in the area. Why else is this wine interesting? It drinks like a California zinfandel with a touch of cabernet franc. On the nose: floral notes of violet and rose. Also, cherry, cherry wood, and red currant. In general, the ..read more
