How to Connect Amp and Receiver and Control Volume

Question: Is there a way to connect an amp and receiver so as not to use zone 2 so that we can have audio volume controlled by the receiver? Problem: We just moved into a new (to us) but very old home with whole-home speakers. They are connected to an amp under the stairs - like Harry Potter. I bought an Onkyo AVR so that we can airplay music to the system. The receiver is connected to the amp via Zone 2 out RCA cables to the amp’s line-in. It plays music but the main volume control on the... How to Connect Amp and Receiver and Control Volume ..read more

Problem with 4:4:4 passthrough with Sony AZ5000ES to X90L?

Hey guys, I saved up for a long time and just upgraded my entire setup to the latest Apple TV, Sony AZ5000ES, and the Sony X90L. I connected the Apple TV box to the media box on the Sony receiver, and the TV to the receiver via the eARC/ARC port. On the Apple TV, I tried to set up the video quality to 4:4:4, but it failed, asking me to check the cable for SDR compatibility. I thought I had a bad cable since it was a 15 feet cable from the receiver to the TV (it was also a cable provided by... Problem with 4:4:4 passthrough with Sony AZ5000ES to X90L ..read more

Help an audio novice select a new receiver?

I'm a low/medium home theater enthusiast limited by space and the wall I share with another unit. I understand the visual side much more than the audio side. Just upgraded to a new LG G3 and my current receiver (Yamaha RX-A770) isn't HDMI 2.1 so I can't take advantage of all the TV's features. This brings me to my problem: I need a new receiver but I'm audio clueless, so I don't really know what I "need" or would be beneficial for me, the receivers I'm looking at all seem similar and... I'm using an old Denon s530bt AVR Speakers are all pioneer Andrew Jackson models. 2 floors, 1 center, 2 surround. The hiss sounds like air escaping a tire but very slightly staticy. Hiss is only present at 70+ volume, and increases with volume. Hiss is NOT present on "direct" sound mode. Hiss is present with no input sources connected. And still present with outlets from different rooms. Hiss is present in Bluetooth audio source with no other sources connected ..read more

General disccussion - amplifier theory and output with multiple speakers

Whilst I am not a qualified electronics engineer I'm fairly conversant with most aspects of HiFi. After recently doing a fitout in an apartment with a stack of hifi equipment with a multitude of speakers I've discovered another understanding of amplifier specifications. The addition multiple speakers even where amplifier load in terms of overall capacitance is managed properly still creates a shortfall in an amplifiers ability to provide full rated output due to the current delivery... What is the difference between an amplifier and an EDFA?

I bought some EDFA devices before. I know they can work with OLT. I have always been curious about its full name. I looked up information and found that it is called Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier. Is it a type of amplifier? Or is it different from ordinary amplifiers? I looked up some information and saw some articles introducing EDFA, such as this blog, but I still don’t quite understand the difference between EDFA and ordinary amplifiers ..read more

Howdy...So here goes...My Yamaha RX-A6A receiver (very happy with it, except for this odd-ball moment). When I turn OFF my entire system, regardless of the source I was using, the Yamaha RX-A6A turns back ON for about two-seconds roughly five minutes after the complete power down. I'm thinking it has something to do with CEC or who know what... I can hear the relays 'CLICK' and the display lights up for a moment, then it powers off. Any thoughts would be appreciated ..read more

I have an Nad in theater bypass mode and the front 2 channels coming out of the front channels from a Yamaha. When I set the Nad into theater bypass mode and only in bypass mode I get a buzz sound coming from the tweeters only. I tried different rca cables. All units are plugged into the same outlet. I tried Okay, so as someone suggested, why don’t I try and figure out the problem with the Nad in theater bypass mode and the front 2 channels coming out of the avr. I hooked up my old Yamaha...
