As we celebrate National Farmworker Awareness Week on March 25-31, we recognize how essential and valuable farmworkers are in our supply chain worldwide. This is an important chance for us to bring attention to the challenges this vulnerable population faces, while honoring their crucial role in our food system and everyday lives. As we work to build a more inclusive and equitable food system through transparent, responsible labor practices, one of our goals is to bring awareness to the overlap between populations facing food insecurity and the global farmworker community. “Farmworkers ..read more

For example, one study from Georgia completed in 2011 found that 63% of migrant and seasonal workers surveyed struggled to feed themselves and their families (1.). We've partnered with the Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) as part of our mission to i ..read more

Protected agriculture refers to the use of technology to modify the natural environment of vegetable crops in order to extend their growing season and produce higher yields.  Controlled environment agriculture is another term for the cultivation of vegetable crops, often in greenhouses equipped with technology to achieve optimal growing conditions such as temperature, moisture, lighting, pest management and plant nutrition.  Both methods often go hand-in-hand when it comes to producing more food on less land, in nearly any region of the world and on a year-round basis while mi ..read more

Among the many challenges facing the world today including climate change, the growing global demand for food, increased need for nutrition, and economic hurdles facing rural communities, no industry is as uniquely positioned and equipped to positively impact all these areas on a large-scale as is agriculture. The World Resources Institute (WRI) estimates that farmers will need to provide enough food to feed nearly 10 billion people by 2050. At the same time, and in order to meet this goal in a way that does not completely decimate the environment, agriculture will need to drastic ..read more

Thursday, October 15, 2020, marked the realization of a promise made to the community of Stanford, Kentucky with a ribbon cutting ceremony presenting the commonwealth’s first high-tech greenhouse to the public for the first time. Recognizing the opportunity for Kentucky to become a leader in sustainable food production as well as early signs of a trend toward local food among key market segments, in 2015 we began scouting locations in rural communities across the state. Four years after breaking ground on the 30-acre campus in Stanford, our leadership will is joined by Senior Adv ..read more
