Creating a distinctive atmosphere in the EFL Classroom   What will create a distinctive atmosphere and what new techniques have you introduced in your class? What rapport will you build? How significant will this be in the success of your class?   “Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.” (Rita Mae Brown)   The role of a teacher may vary considerably depending on the nature of the class or session. The needs and the levels of the students differ considerably. In order to gauge the level of the student ..read more

Correcting Writing in TEFL   My method of correcting writing depends on the students and the purpose of their writing. If I am correcting a students writing who is preparing for an exam, I try to be more rigorous with their errors. On occasions where a student has produced a piece of writing for extra practice, I will highlight the main and most frequent errors within their work. A reoccurring problem that I have identified when correcting essays or writing questions, is that students do not tend to follow a structure. I encourage all of my students when doing a piece of writing to do a b ..read more

Online Learning vs Teacher Led Classes: which is the best method? In the modern digital age, online learning and courses have become more popular than ever before, offering students greater opportunities for control over their own studies. So what is best: Online Learning vs Teacher Led Classes? A 2010 report by The Sloan Consortium, an American group which releases annual reports on online education in the USA, revealed a 350% increase in numbers of students enrolled in online courses since 2002, and a 21% annual increase in the USA alone. Diary submitted by Julia A, Erasmus+ internship in Valencia Through the language school at the which I was interning I quickly realised that the most important thing for students when preparing for a standardised English test when they are at B and C1 level is practice! This seems obvious but to me it seems the most important thing. They have to prepare for tests with 4 areas which are common for language learning: speaking, reading, writing, and listening and I found that the classes in which they had to practice through these mock tests were showing great results through steady improvement ..read more

Ideas for an out-of-class English Club   Teaching out of a curriculum and away from certain restraints can be a very rewarding experience for both students and teacher.  Often classes can be conducted in a more informal fashion and can supply an opportunity to put more of a ‘spark’ into the learning process.   In the case of language acquisition, this is no different.  With reduced formality, modes of teaching can be adapted to create an experience that can even be viewed as ‘fun’.  Learning need not be choresome in routine lessons but extra curricular activities lend ..read more

Making lessons student-centred Reflective Diary submitted by Laura. This assignment aims to discuss the ways EFL teachers can make their lessons student-centred. I will discuss this topic using my own experience as well as the knowledge and experience of others who have wrote about the subject. “I want to help you in ways which are effective for you and match your needs” (Moore, 1999).   Before I go on to discuss ‘student-centred learning’ (SCL), it is beneficial to have an understanding of ‘teacher-centred learning’ (TCL), in order for a direct comparison to be made. In regards to teache ..read more

Is there an alternative to homework? How do I find out how much English my students know?

Diary submitted by Julia A, Erasmus+ internship in Valencia   Traditional homework is often considered to be crucial to the learning process of a student. In my opinion, it is as well. Homework allows students to focus on their English learning outside of the classroom, as well as to reflect and practice what they have learned. I have questioned this working at the language school, where the teachers very rarely give any homework to their students (at least at B2-C1 level). This has allowed me to reflect on whether there are alternatives to homework or if it is as important as I once thou ..read more

Behaviour management with young learners Reflective Diary submitted by Lisa I arrived in Spain in 2011, Initially nannying for a family with a 1 year old girl in Malasaña, in the centre of Madrid. The idea they had was for me to talk to her only in English. It worked out very well. I believe in the Montessori method where children are not told they are bad when they misbehave, just redirecting their behaviour and showing them the right thing to do. In 2012, I started working with young learners age 3-6 in different schools around Madrid. I saw lots of different types of behaviour management te ..read more

Diary submitted by Julia A, Erasmus+ internship in Valencia  I wanted to premise this reflective diary by stating that I believe that teachers are not accredited as much importance as they should be in society, neither in terms of wage or respect. As a teacher, my philosophy is centred around 3 main points; trying to reach a correct balance between a teacher-centred and student-centred approach, the importance of creating an all-round profile of a student as a person (not only as a student), and the importance of managing to adapt as a teacher to a globalizing and increasingly technologic ..read more
