Vehicle Modeling and Design for Games Part .01 - Wheels, by Serge Karpovs.

Introduction. Hello! Today I would like to share a great way that I recently found to prototype and design vehicle tires and rims for games. There are many ways to design a wheel using various software packages like Blender/Maya/3Dmax, Fusion 360, Photoshop photo-bashing, or even traditional methods like drawing on paper. In my opinion, I think these softwares don't provide enough freedom for iterations and are not so flexible for exploring various design forms. Zbrush offers a unique opportunity to quickly manipulate shapes, designs, and forms, helping artists forget about technical aspects ..read more

Let me thank Javier Benitez for this fantastic opportunity to share my One Two scene in detail on his blog. My name is Daan Hesterman, and I am a 22-year-old junior 3D artist working in the AAA game industry, with close to a year of experience in game development. I have a degree in game art and have been modeling for around 5 years. I started this project on November 2nd of 2018, and finished it on November 13th of 2020. I want to mention that I didn't track my progress throughout the scene's development, so some images can be slightly different from what you might expect when reading. These ..read more

Hello everyone, my name is François Larrieu, and I am currently a student at New3dge and a Contract Artist at Dekogon living in Paris, France. Since I started 3D five years ago, I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do in my life. This job brings me everything, creativity, concentration, imagination, and a sense of personal criticism. Through this project, I wanted to show a large part of my childhood: The Brittany. It's been 2 years since I went back, and I miss it, so I wanted to pay him "homage" by recreating the most symbolic of things in Brittany, fishing (and also the crepes ..read more

Hello, I'm Howel Ganuchaud, a Weapons and Environments artist from France. I had the pleasure to write a previous article here, where I focused on my texturing workflow and how I approach texturing in general. Find the article below: The Howel Ganuchaud Guide for Modern Gun Texturing. In this very complete article, Howel Ganuchaud will teach us his methods and thought processes when texturing guns. Game Art BlogHowel Ganuchaud I'm doing weapons for some years now. I always used the subdiv workflow, the "classic" workflow, I would even say. I knew Fusion was something I wanted to look at ..read more

From English Teacher to Character Artist - A Multipassion Venture by Sean Ferreira.

It wasn't until July 2020 (a little over a year now as I'm writing) that I started my journey of learning the craft of creating AAA game-ready characters. Before that, all I did was help people understand other people's languages, many people, from all over the world and all walks of life. But there's more to my story than that. Perhaps I should guide you in the four steps (or passions) that took me where I am today. .01 - Languages. First of all, I firmly believe that video games were my main inspiration to become an English teacher. It all started when I was about 8 back in Brazil, where I ..read more

Connecting the Dots - From Outdoor Advertising Designer to Games Digital Artist.

I am a big fan of Steve Jobs, and of course, I watched all the videos of his speech in public. I was particularly struck by his speech to graduates of Stanford University. Yes, the same speech where he said: "connecting the dots" between two important events. Looking at my friend, 2D, 3D artist, animator Maksim Petrik, I understand that the concept of dots really works. It all started in 2008 and continued in 2021. The events that took place during this period helped to connect these dots. I want to share this motivating story with you. I studied international economics for two years at the ..read more

Hi! My name is Howel Ganuchaud. I'm a freelance Environments & Weapons artist from France. Today, I would like to talk about weapons texturing in-depth. Some ideas and principles can be used for any props texturing, but I'm going to focus this article on weapons and how you can push that last 10% and reach that "godly" level. Some context before starting. I love firearms. I'm not talking about the political side of firearms (good or bad). I'm talking about designs, shapes, materials, internal systems, etc. Every time I watch a video about the internal system of a firearm, I'm always impre ..read more

Interviewing Weapons Artist Enrico Santi - Portfolio Interviews .02

I remember how we used to discuss how so not ready we were to become AAA artists while enjoying some top-notch burgers in Valencia. At that time, we used to spend a lot of time together talking about our future plans, or discussing how our day at work had gone. One day, without none of us realizing it, we started to get apart. I guess it is what life does sometimes, especially with a job that forces you to move around so much. Sometimes the planets align and special things happen. After around 7 years of not knowing much from each other, I decided to contact him to get an article for the blog ..read more

Hello there! My name is Ben Johnston, and I am a freelance weapons artist from the UK. My 3D journey started about 2 years ago, where, like many, I stumbled upon a trailer for a blender course revolving around a rather famous doughnut. Since then, 3D has become an obsession, with my focus becoming games art and then, most specifically, weapons art. I’ve had the pleasure of creating a series of modern weapons for an unannounced project, the most recent I will breakdown in this article which I hope you will find useful! Like any project, the beginning starts with researching and collecting refe ..read more

From Aspiring Game Artist to CEO of a Successful Outsourcing Studio - By Bryce Szandro.

Over the years, many people have wondered how I ended up running a successful outsourcing business. In all honesty, it’s been a long journey, and I’m still currently walking the path. If I could say what my starting point was, I was just 6 years old. My parents gifted me an Xbox for Christmas, and the first game I played was Brute force. Once I started playing, I knew this was what I wanted for a career, and who knew it would put me on the course for where I am today. Flash forward to when I was 14 playing around in UDK (Unreal Development Kit), or basically, Unreal Engine 3. The 3D community ..read more
