I recently had to make an unexpected trip. Work was cool about it so I got a laptop to take with me to a do a few work things while I was out of town. We take 3 or 4 vacations a year as well and I thought it would be nice for those as well. Anyway. This thing is only gonna get touched a few times a year and has a non removable battery. What is the best way to keep this thing stored? Should I leave it on the power adapter or just leave it in its case and charge it when I need it ..read more

Add or swap 1G SSD?

My kid has a new W10 laptop with decent specs except the M2 SSD is only 256G. I've got a 1T 2.5" to upgrade. Thing is we did this already and it was fiddly to have the OS on the 256G and Steam stuff on the 1T. Unless you were vigilant Steam would try to put stuff on the 256G and clog it up. So what to do? Clone the 256G to the 1T and then remove the 256G and only run the 1T? If so which cloning software? Put em both in and let the kid struggle with the fiddlyness? Clone the 256G to the 1T, and then erase the 256G? Make a drive pool out of the both of them? (how?) Toss both and spring for ..read more

A mobile workstation should be useful for light gaming and potentially more. Our son likes to play a game called War Thunder which does not have excessive system requirements: War Thunder — Realistic Military Vehicles Online Combat Game for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Play for Free About the Game Play for free with friends in the most realistic online game warthunder.com I am trying to find a laptop that is capable of playing this game well and staying away from the higher cost and energy inefficient gaming laptops. Are you able to refer me to any specific models? I am hoping a Lenovo P1 ..read more

Help with external display on laptop.

I've got an external keyboard/mouse and display hooked up to my laptop via a KVM. Getting the external display to work before it automatically shuts down has always been an issue with devices hooked up the the KVM. I quite often needed to switch the KVM to an always on ChromeCast dongle to wake the display up before switching to my phone or my old laptop. Opening and closing the lid on the old laptop usually did the trick. Now comes a new laptop with an AMD RX 7700S GPU plus whatever iGPU comes with a 7735HS CPU. The screen isn't stable as it wonders what to do with the external monitor so ch ..read more

Need a recommendation for a gaming laptop in the $1000-1200 range

Hi, I plan to game on my laptop and also use it for day-to-day tasks. I mostly play single player games like Fallout 4 and Elden Ring, along with Minecraft. I need the laptop to be small and portable above all else, with gaming performance as a secondary concern because I already have a capable gaming PC. My limit for size is about a 15 inch screen. I also need it to play well with Linux (probably going be using Arch), and as long as it does that, I have no brand preferences. I also saw this laptop (a Lenovo Legion Slim OLED) for $1000. Would this suit my needs? P.S. I live near a Microcente ..read more

Keyboards on laptops

Most of the keyboards I've tried on various laptops & chromebooks are pretty much crap. I grew up using a manual typewriter, followed by a huge, clickey IBM keyboard. I can usually type 60 to 70 words per minute on a nice keyboard that has good key travel, but so many keyboards barely move when you try to type on them. I find it extremely annoying. Anyone else absolutely hate using laptop keyboards because of this? I wish that laptops had user replaceable (removeable) keyboard sections so that we could customize them as desired. I've even been tempted to put together my own "briefcase c ..read more
