In this podcast we venture to Central Africa and a country we have not visited before in over 11 years on air. In some ways, the Democratic Republic of Congo is more liberal than many African states, yet as we will hear, so many of the LGBTI community’s challenges are similar.
Despite these challenges, another similarity is that there are dedicated and committed champions for the Congolese rainbow community. To share their story, we are joined by Raphaëlle Mutambala, Finance Officer at Rainbow Sunrise Mapambazuko.

The latest display of World Pride has just concluded in Sydney. It was a month of celebrations of all things queer. But life is not all rainbows. There is evil in our ranks. It’s been called an assault on religious minorities, women and LGBT people. A worrying step back for democracy and human rights. And a crackdown on dissent. There are very few, if any, people speaking out in support of the Indonesia’s new criminal code. Yet it passed parliament with the support of almost all political parties.
It contains some direct threats to Indonesia’s LGBT community and also some potentially hidden ones. To guide us through the extensive changes and what they mean, in this podcast we are joined by Tim Lindsey – the Director of the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Soci ..read more
