AZ vets call Sinema out. Four veterans condemned Senator Sinema’s proposal to find compromise on abortion access in the military. Senator Tommy Tuberville is currently implementing a blockade on promotions in protest of a military policy that covers travel costs for service members who need to travel out of state to access health care that is not legal where they’re stationed. Arizona vets say that Sinema’s call for “middle ground” betrays Arizona values and those that they fought for. A big shoutout to our partners with Common Defense and VetsForward ..read more

ICYMI: Reproductive rights groups launch efforts to put abortion on the 2024 ballot! The Arizona for Abortion Access ballot initiative would give voters the opportunity to enshrine abortion access as a right in the Arizona constitution. If Arizonans approve the measure, abortion will be protected against ongoing attempts by anti-abortion politicians to ban or limit access. Groups have until July 2024 to collect valid 384,000 signatures to get the measure on the ballot, but are aiming to collect significantl ..read more

Voucher program gets worse…and worse…and worse
Discrimination. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has issued a warning to families that accepting a voucher means losing your rights to protections against discrimination. Under Arizona law, private schools are enabled to discriminate against students and families based on religion, learning ability, and sexual orientation. And, private schools are not required to adhere to federal disability protections for students.
Lack of security. A recent data breach of the program’s claims-processing ..read more

Kari Lake lost, again. On Monday, an Arizona judge rejected former gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake’s final lawsuit in her attempt to overturn her loss to Gov. Katie Hobbs in the 2022 election. Lake spent the months leading up to the election pushing lies and conspiracy theories about our elections, and particularly targeting and discouraging the use of mail-in ballots, which have been widely popular in Arizona for voters of both parties. Now, after yet another failed lawsuit, Lake announced that she plans “play by the rules” to pursue voter registration and ballot chas ..read more

We have a budget! On Wednesday the Arizona Legislature passed a budget that makes key investments in housing, education, healthcare, and tribal communities. These wins are a result of the tireless efforts by grassroots organizations who have been fighting for our communities for years. One disappointment from the budget is that Republicans refused to negotiate to put a cap on their out of control universal voucher program that threatens to bankrupt our state. While we celebrate the wins from this budget, the fight to repeal the voucher program is not over.

“Schools are doing the choosing”. Private and religious schools are being allowed to discriminate against LGBTQ+ students, teachers, and families, all on the taxpayer dime. Arizona’s new voucher handbook offers no protections against discrimination, while diverting hundreds of millions of dollars from public schools to fund these unaccountable private schools. It’s no surprise that Superintendent Tom Horne and Republican lawmakers are doing nothing to protect them – attacking trans youth and defunding public schools are top of their agenda.

Medication abortion is protected in Arizona. Access to mifepristone remains safe, legal, and accessible in Arizona. Late last (last) week, on May 21st, the Supreme Court extended a pause on a ruling by a Texas judge attempting to ban the abortion medication mifepristone by stripping it of FDA-approval. After the Texas ruling, AG Kris Mayes joined a multistate coalition to challenge that lawsuit, and 19 Arizona lawmakers signed on to a letterdemanding its reversal. Arizonans’ access to mifepristone is also protected by a separate Washington state case, tha ..read more

Where’s Wendy? At state Sen. Wendy Rogers’ request, an Arizona judge issued an order barring a reporter from contacting her at any of her homes, in an apparent attempt to silence questions over her residency. Under Arizona law, candidates must be registered to vote in the county of the legislative district they are running to serve. Rogers, who owns several homes in the East Valley, is registered to vote at a Flagstaff mobile home. She has largely evaded questions from reporters and refused to address rumors that she does not actually live in Flagstaff, but instead used ..read more
