Alison Bechdel’s iconic cartoon has been adapted into an audio drama. Dykes to Watch Out For ran from 1983 to 2008, documenting lesbian relationships, community, and politics for 25 years. It followed the story of Mo, an anxious but charming lesbian committed to her feminist politics, and her larger-than-life group of friends and lovers. Now Pulitzer-nominated playwright Madeleine George has brought this groundbreaking classic to a new medium, and a fresh generation of lesbians. It’s been a year since Mo last had sex. And she’s ready to meet Ms Right. The trouble is, nobody seems to live up t ..read more

Patricia Highsmith. Loving Highsmith. Get ready – there’s an upcoming biopic of Patricia Highsmith called The Murderous Miss Highsmith! Titanic was one of the biggest movies of all time. Now, 25 years later, it’s coming back to the big screen. And while the love story between Jack and Rose was super straight, Titanic was the ship that launched a thousand lesbian haircuts. How many masc-of-center women went to the barber and asked for a 1997 Leonardo DiCaprio? But now there’s a new piece of sapphic culture inspired by the Ship of Dreams (which is just as well given Leo’s being dragged to filth for dating a 19 year-old). Leonardo DiCaprio sporting The Haircut in Titanic Author Adiba Jaigirdar is back with a new book: A Million t ..read more

Colorblind Lesbian Romance: Good Intentions, Unrealistic Stories

I read a lot of lesbian books. Lesfic is my go-to genre, my favorite way of unwinding. My shelves are stacked with books from Ylva, Bold Strokes, Bella, and a growing number of indies. The rise of small publishers and self-publishing have been a gamechanger, allowing more lesbian stories than ever before to reach readers. But – much as I love lesfic – I’m not blind to its faults. Lesfic is extremely white. That’s not unique to the genre. Just 11 percent of novels released in 2018 were written by people of color. Eighty-nine percent were by white authors. Little has changed since then. Women ..read more

Lauren Hough made waves with her debut. Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing, a collection of autobiographical essays, was met with near universal acclaim. This stunning debut spent two weeks as a New York Times best-seller. And the audiobook is narrated by none other than Cate Blanchett. Hough’s book went from strength to strength. It was even nominated for a Lammy Award – a prestigious LGBTQ literary prize. But then Lambda Literary cancelled Hough’s nomination. Lambda “grew concerned” about “Twitter disputes.” And this controversy has overshadowed a truly remarkable tale. Hough’s book is well w ..read more
