Pumpkins and Supply Chain
Do It Yourself Crafts

One of these subjects is fun! The other….less so. But sometimes when we have situations, we also have solutions.   The supply chain is going to continue to affect the pottery industry, as one of the main components of clay, talc, is no longer available in North America. This means that clay bodies have changed, and sometimes we can’t get what we want and need. And, sadly, it means that what we can get has gone up in price.    This past weekend, however, I was able to find both white slip (the liquid clay we use to make pumpkins and other slip-cast items in house) and whit ..read more

Getting Ready for “Maycember”
Do It Yourself Crafts
by Julia McNair

Maycember Several years ago, I started referring to May as “Maycember”. For Moms, there might not be a busier month than May. It is relentless and I think it is ironic that Mother’s Day is in the middle of that. (I’ve long said that Mother’s Day ends when breakfast does, because that’s about when I had to take back over.) We have a whirl of activity AND (unlike December) all of the sports coming to a close as well. There is no greater joy on a child’s face than when they are picked for All-Stars…and then you see Mommas doing the mental rearranging of all the schedules to make it work. Whew. Ma ..read more

Tall tree on right is 18″ tree We love Christmas at Do It Yourself Crafts! The season starts very early here – in fact, it’s already Christmas for us! We are doing Santa Handprint ornaments and Cookies For Santa plates and if I could turn the air conditioner down low enough, you’d really feel like it was time for Santa to make a visit. One of the most iconic symbols of Christmas in the pottery world are the Vintage Christmas trees. These light-up classics remind people of visiting their grandparents and getting to put the colored lights in the holes was a special treat for many. If your ..read more

Pumpkin season is here!
Do It Yourself Crafts
by Julia McNair

It feels like a million degrees with a billion percent humidity, so why am I thinking about Halloween? Well, because it’s pumpkin season! At least, it’s POTTERY pumpkin season! For 16 years, we’ve had custom pumpkins.  I can remember this because I was pregnant the first year I carved them and set the pumpkin on top of my belly. I would drive to my friend Pam’s house and she would pour the molds and I would carve them. Two years ago, Pam retired and we brought them “in house” so that we can still make them. This year, I needed to get all new molds. After ordering them earlier in the sprin ..read more

Deadlines! Deadlines! Deadlines!
Do It Yourself Crafts

This is the time of year that I think is, somehow, on a slide. Everything goes sooooo fast once spring break and Easter is over. It also makes a difference when it goes from winter to… well, not quite summer, but boy did it get warm quickly. But here we are and it’s time to talk about deadlines so everyone is ready! If you are painting for Mother’s Day, the deadline will be Monday 3 and the items will be ready on Saturday May 8. If you are having us do any of the custom painting, you will need to come in by Wednesday April 28 for our custom artist to have time to finish your project. As always ..read more

“Handprint” Bowls Now Available
Do It Yourself Crafts

Would you like to preserve your family’s prints in the most unique way? We are thrilled to be offering a Clay Handprint bowl, and you won’t even need to bring the family in to make it. To make this one-of-a-kind bowl, you’ll need a traced outline of everyone you want to include in the bowl. The best way to do this is just like we did it in elementary school – trace around on a piece of 8 1/2 x 11″ paper. Write the name of each person’s name next to the hand, and bring them all to us. (If you have family far away and they want to scan and send it to you, that will work fine, but please don’t ha ..read more

Summer Camp at DIYC 2021
Do It Yourself Crafts

We are so excited to be offering camps this summer – this year we’re doing things a little bit differently, and we think it’s going to be pretty amazing. Camps are offered each week from June 7 until August 9, and are from 9 am to 1 pm Monday-Friday. You sign up for each week you want to attend, and you can sign up for more than one week. In the past, we’ve always had “theme weeks” and that’s been a whole lot of fun. But it also meant that if you really love cats and your family has plans already for the week of the “Cats and Dogs” camp, you missed out. So, this year we are NOT having themes ..read more
