Thanksgiving Greetings!
This week has been all about boxing seeds to send to Germany and cleaning seeds for greenhouse production. I sewed a huge amount of cloth bags and Chris is packing them full of our seed crops in preparation for shipping them to Jelitto in Germany. Later today, I’ll begin the daunting process of filling out the export documentation and submitting it so that we can get the inspections that are required to actually ship the seeds, hopefully by end of week if we are lucky.
Recently, M’lissa came for a visit and we were delighted….especially Sadie above all of the re ..read more

Frozen Greetings!
Our Desert Canyon Bigtooth Maple was so beautiful at the end of last week. Today it is naked of all it’s gorgeous salmon colored leaves. Yesterday brought 12 inches of very wet moisture-laden snow to us and a nighttime temperatures of 9 degrees F. The moisture is so welcome, but temperatures that cold, when things are not even close to dormant, is very difficult for the plants. We are hoping that we don’t loose too many plants because of the extreme cold this early in the fall.
On the 20th of October, we hosted an organic farming workshop for the Colorado Dept. of Agricultu ..read more

We have been keeping super busy with greenhouse and nursery projects and seed harvesting!
It is time for me to move nursery plants into the Hygge House, where they will be kept under frost blanket for protection, but unheated, throughout the cold months of this fall and winter. These are some of the plants that will be ready for sale next spring during Open Farm Days and our Farm Stand Plant Sale.
We had our first nights of frost, so it is time now to roll down the sides on the greenhouses and prepare for the cold weather. That meant a weed trimming event for Chris of all the sides on ..read more

Hi There,
A best friend asked after my last post if I could explain how to grow Ginger, as she would like to grow it to use in her cooking. Here are the guidelines I posted on Facebook for anyone that would also like to know.
If you want to grow ginger, it is pretty easy to do, but requires patience. The first step is a large pot with good quality potting soil and then go to the grocery and buy a piece of fresh organic ginger root. Once home, plant the root sideways, like an iris, not up and down, and put the rhizomes about 3″ deep. Now you must be patient. Keep the soil evenly moist, b ..read more

Greetings of the Autumn Equinox!
Cedar has much to report in this post. He’ll start off by telling you that when there happens to be rain, the dry wash in Red Canyon Park has just enough water in it to be a grand playground! He even went up on this rock, that was about at head level of Chris and I, and he definitely thought he was king dog of the rock.
We also want to introduce you to the newest part of our farm family. Please meet Cricket! Cricket’s people are Liz and Jake and we are so happy that Liz brings Cricket to work with her each day and we are all enjoying her fun and love very muc ..read more

Another very busy week here. All of our hard good supplies, like pots and trays etc. arrived this week and are very nicely stocked into the supply barn. Feels good to know that most of the things we will need to grow plants to sell for next year are here and ready to go when we are ready to use them.
Remember that terrible hail store we had in July…well, the greenhouse plastic arrived so we could start recovering greenhouses before the cold months of the year come.
Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my camera to work on the day we recovered the Basil Greenhouse this week, but this is a pic ..read more

Cedar turned 14 weeks old this weekend and every day he is learning so many new things. He met a new dog friend named Cleo yesterday, and has been socializing with all sorts of people. Today he is learning what it means to be an office dog. He doesn’t think it is very exciting.
We have ordered all our hard good supplies for next year, which is all the pots, trays, vermiculite, per-lite and most other things we will need to produce our plants. That means this week’s huge task will be organizing the supply barn in preparation for those new supplies to arrive. Believe me, the supply barn tends ..read more

Although we start planting a few things sooner, August is really the kick-off month for propagation of plants for the spring 2024 busy season. This next week will find the first big sowing of native perennials and this past week I put many varieties of seeds into stratification so that we can sow them in the coming months.
Stratification is a physical seed treatment of either moisture, warmth or cold or some combination of the above. This process convinces the seeds that it is time to sprout. Many seeds, especially natives, won’t germinate or won’t germinate very well, without having gone thr ..read more

Summer Hot Greetings!
Many of you know Shrek our farm dog, and if you read this blog regularly, you will know that Shrek is constantly a part of the posts I write.
With so much sadness, Chris and I would like you to know that recently Shrek passed over from old age. He was very happy almost to the very end and this picture was on his last hike the Sunday before he died. We hold so much love and gratitude to Shrek, who brought such richness into our lives every single day.
Last week found me speaking at the Good Medicine Confluence Conference in Lake George, Colorado. The Confluence celebrate ..read more

Meet Caleb, who is our neighbor and our ditch rider, and becoming one of the most knowledgeable heirloom and heritage fruit tree experts in this part of the four-corners States! We are very excited to be able to purchase young grated heirloom fruit trees from Caleb, that we will grow out, and then make available for sale in our Farm Stand store over the next two years. We are excited to be able to work with Caleb for many of our heirtage fruit trees.
We did have some unwelcome excitement this past week too. We heard something chirping in our house and thought it was a young Curved Billed Thr ..read more
