McNaughton bowl coring system.

I got mine about a month ago. I finally got a few logs to try it out on. I was very impressed. Very first core came out right at the depth I wanted. All of the bowls were the same diameter but some were deeper than others. I was able to adjust it to core the same width but not as deep. A friend of mine with the Oneway said he can’t do that with his. I heard a lot of horror stories about learning curve and problems but I thought it was very easy to use and accurate right out of the box. A friend gave me three Mamosa logs and I cored out six bowls ..read more

As part of my screwing around with the lathe I wanted to turn some drawer knobs. Not only for the experience, but because I wanted some for my shop cabinets. So I searched up a quick "knob turning" set of instructions, this one from Wood Magazine, and tried it out. First step, make a screw chuck. mine is in the pic and turned out much as they directed. Then I mounted a 1 7/8" square x 1 1/8" thick blank (cherry) and set out to make a knob. But the blank comes off the chuck. Not unscrewed, but at first the screwed tore the hole out and the blank fell off. I drilled a much smaller hole on the op ..read more

The old Dogwood tree, outside my window, should be in full bloom tomorrow. Hard to believe when I transplanted it, from my parents mountain property, it was a single, spindly stick. That was 56 years ago!     Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN showed us a beautiful new turned lidded box he made. He said this one is made from Maple.   He certainly has perfected the flocking technique, too! Our turners gave him lots of compliments in his post-     @Gerald has been creating amazing designs with his JaHo jig. His most recent refrigerator magnet is a beauty!   ..read more

Proportions and Design

I have been working to improve my turnings in design and proportion. Bowls have not been too much of a problem.         However, other turnings seem to lack the visual appeal I see in other’s work. These tiny vases are intended just as practice to get a feel for what looks right.      the one on the right, setting on the ways, didn’t survive. Too thin at the neck and broke while finishing off the bottom.        None of them look like what I envisioned as far as graceful lines and pleasing proportions. Suggestions for improvements ..read more

I am looking for the little final that goes on top of the key chain. I have used up all the kits that I once found on clearance on the web. I make rifle casing key chain using the rifle casing and a real bullet in the bottom. I need to make several for a craft she coming up next month. I hate to  uh the whole kit just for one piece. I have everything else needed. So any suggestions as to where I can get them ..read more

Started this project as a way to use small pieces of wood and add to product line. Got started with Spalted wood and it seems I have a lot in the shop. So I turned some plain buttons for the JaHo also. Started trying to use JaHo today and after starting found that the chuck holding par was too big to go all the way around so more tomorrow when I get couple screws. Oh also experimented with gilding wax and liming     ..read more

Well, Al Jolson was certainly right about April showers! A little over 3" since Sunday evening and a little more yet to come      Our Patriot Turners- Member @calabrese55 posted a great tip for protecting turnings when chucked to a set of Cole jaws.   In his post, he shows us how he made these foam protectors. Thanks, Mike, for this great idea!     @Fred W. Hargis Jr posted a question about the Easy Wood Tools square cutters.  Our members offered lots of great information. Please check it out and share your experiences. ( @Jordan Martindale  ..read more
