Bottom bowl gouge shaping

Does the left wing of a U-shaped, bottom bowl gouge serve a purpose or can I grind it back and out of the way? (Left wing - referring to the U facing up and tip pointing away from you). I'm trying to avoid a potential catch if I can't clearly see into the cavity of a bowl... am I overthinking this or am I on the right track? I use only a slight angle across the front, like Stuart Batty recommends. Also, the gouge is dedicated to only this task ..read more

Krylon UV Archival Varnish - to prevent box elder color fade

I'm experimenting with Krylon's UV Archival Varnish, to see if it helps prevent fading of the intense color often found in box elder wood, and I wonder if any Creekers have relevant experience that might bear on that question. I obtained access to a box elder (aka, ash-leaf maple, Acer negundo) tree that was cut down recently, and have begun turning some bowls, including this natural edge one, pictured along with a rattle-can of the UV protection varnish: IMG_20240420_132720826.jpg Thanks for sharing whatever insight you can lend me. Lathe duplicator: Rockler now or hold out for a used Vega

I had a Vega table saw fence once and was really impressed with it. The Vega duplicator looks well made but ent made anymore. I also like the shape ov the carbide insert on the Vega versus the pointy stick cutter on the Rockler. The Grizzly and the Rockler look like pretty much the same thing. So what should I do? Another question. I pulled up the manual on the Rockler and it looks like it was written in the ‘60’s. Is it just some other product anodized blue ..read more

I'm wanting to turn forms from unseasoned Douglas Fir With extremes of hardness between winter and summer wood I'm struggling with tearout, particularly on the end end grain areas.Even with hair thin cuts and sharp chisels still getting tearout. Has anyone found a particular gouge grind profile and presentation or any other process helpful? What process do people use to bleach turned forms?I want to remove colour, not cover with stain ..read more
