I got mine about a month ago. I finally got a few logs to try it out on. I was very impressed. Very first core came out right at the depth I wanted. All of the bowls were the same diameter but some were deeper than others. I was able to adjust it to core the same width but not as deep. A friend of mine with the Oneway said he can’t do that with his. I heard a lot of horror stories about learning curve and problems but I thought it was very easy to use and accurate right out of the box. A... Read more ..read more

Anyone ever turn some Ipe wood?

Just roughed a bowl from Ipe, and I think this is the most difficult wood to turn that I've ever encountered. Dulls cutting edges very quickly. Previously, the winner was Desert Ironwood, but Ipe has a Janka rating of 3510 while the Desert Ironwood is a mere 3260 Janka hardness rating. (That's pretty darn hard and dense, no matter how you look at it.) It didn't help that this piece of Ipe was around 10% MC......so, it's been setting in storage somewhere for a long time to begin with... Read more ..read more

I have finished the front of my first basket illusion piece. My question for the experts, does the back usually mirror the front, or closely mirror it? Do any ever leave it plain? This is a very enjoyable path in woodturning ..read more

I have a 2 month old Powermatic PM2014... twice now after an hour or so of turning, I have no reverse... it just turns in the forward direction regardless of the switch position. I suspect the switch is not making contact, but would like your opinion or experience with this symptom. Thanks ..read more

Forget the fact that this has my name on it, I know I have few friends here. What I wanted to share is that this kind of thing can really give a hard worker or senior member of your club a huge boost to know the club or event attendees recognize his efforts over the decades are appreciated. Unless you are in the 1 percent that works the hardest at these things, you might not have thought about just how much this is appreciated. 3 of us were inducted Saturday at our event. There are so many great turnings to choose from, that I was having a hard time selecting only one, but when I saw this lady's hat, I immediately thought it was a correct "period piece" for "the great train robbery"!...... If a love affair between hats were possible, then those two would be a match made in heaven! -o- Robins Egg Raffia A collaboration with my wife Alison. Turned from London Plane, branded, milk paint, flat lacquer spray. The ribbon is Anigre and the flower is Arbutus Burl shavings. The hat after branding weighed 6.7 ounces and there were several flare ups... www.aawfor ..read more

I plan on trying to do segmented turning. I have never done any segmented turning and right now gathering information. I am wondering if anyone has used the Zinsser wood bleach on a segmented turning glued with Titebond III. Will it destroy the glue joint? I don’t thing the bleach will go deep enough before gluing, but don’t know for sure ..read more

Baldor Grinder Modification

I have a Baldor grinder and the Wolverine sharpening jig. I cannot use the Wolverine’s flat plate attachment because it hits the front of the grinder guard, preventing me from moving it close enough to the wheel. I’m thinking of cutting away the front of the guard where the red line is. Anyone see any issues with this? Worst case I could just attach the platform that came with the grinder but I’d rather not have togo back and forth ..read more
