Have an idea for an exhibit using library collections? We are now accepting proposals for exhibits in the Maihaugen Gallery (14N-130) and the Hayden Library Loft (14S-100). Any MIT faculty, student, or staff member can submit a proposal. Past exhibits have explored the Institute’s history with South Asia and China, MIT women in biology and chemistry, collections related to the history of flight and other innovations, and more. This World Digital Preservation Day, MIT Libraries is looking back over some of the progress we’ve made since launching our Comprehensive Digital Preservation Service in 2020. Third Annual MIT Prize for Open Data Celebrates Researchers Across MIT

The third annual MIT Prize for Open Data, which included a $2,500 cash prize, was recently awarded to 10 individual and group research projects. Presented jointly by the School of Science and the MIT Libraries, the prize highlights the value of open data — research data that is openly accessible and reusable — at the Institute. The prize winners and 9 honorable mention recipients were honored at the Open Data @ MIT event held Oct. 22 at Hayden Library. In a recent report from the Pew Research Center, nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults polled (73%) say they’ve seen inaccurate news coverage about the 2024 election and half (52%) find it difficult to determine the accuracy of the news they’re reading. With a U.S. presidential election in full swing, conspiracy theories swirling around Hurricane Milton, and the flu season just around the corner, the spread of false information seems to be everywhere. Hayden Library is currently hosting a display of poetry anthologies by African American writers. The collection was curated by Professor Joshua Bennett in MIT’s Literature Section. The collection invites the reader to think about archiving as a cultural practice, and how art like poetry is preserved for future generations (as well as the people who make that work possible: poets, editors, publishers, librarians, and archivists).
