Udio - AI music is knocking it out of the park

I am left speechless by the latest AI Music creator : Udio   I am always seeking out new music on Spotify, so I am very familiar with hearing a lot of new music and trying to evaluate it - and the song snippets produced by this website are incredible. These songs are taking a few seconds to generate, and they sound better than a lot of original music.    Here is a playlist to give you my favorites so far in some different genres. Its scary stuff, I would be proud if I had written any of these songs :    https://www.udio.com/playlists/eGyBUYr4VwaAeUtXYQmLU1     ..read more

Billy Joel has said he almost always writes the music first. I'm just the opposite. I have tons of songs with just lyrics, but few have the accompanying music. You?  ..read more

Writing Lyrics to Music, Some thoughts

Hello, all.    I have been away for some time.  I was very active on the old Muses Muse site and was only somewhat active in the early days of this incarnation.     I dropped by and I see much of the same interaction -- aspiring lyricists wanting to find someone to set their words to music, and musicians gently telling them that what many musicians want is someone to write words to their tracks.   It is VERY HARD to write words to existing music, much more than jotting down some lines and working on editing them.    You have to write with precision ..read more

What are your writing tropes and how to avoid them?

What writing tropes do you have that you're aware of and what do you do to try to avoid them or limit them in your creative process?   Several years ago I had a musician friend jokingly accuse me of using a lot of the same chords in my songs, and more recently another friend who plays lead guitar with me was thrown off at a show we played at because one of the songs we played was in Dm. He later said that threw him off since that's a key I don't usually write in.   These kinds of innocent statements have helped me to notice that most of the songs I've written are in a minor key. or put more simply, how are you producing your music?   I'm sorry if this question has been asked and discussed to death, but I'm *very* new to all this, and I've simply been experimenting with Garageband so far (hey, it's free and been sitting unused on my Macbook for all these years).    Is that what most of you are using? Is Garageband...lame? ?     ..read more

Creativity and Serendipty

ser·en·dip·i·ty /ˌserənˈdipədē/ noun the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. "a fortunate stroke of serendipity"   I thought I would start a thread to share stories about how serendipity sometimes has a major impact on our creative process.  I'll start it off.   As I often do when I don't begin musically with a guitar, I'll start my creative process for a song with a drum loop snippet and a bass line snippet.  That was the case with this song:  Casually Resigned   I  started with the drum loop you hear start the s ..read more

The decline of key changes

In another forum, this article about the use of keys and key changes in number one hits since the 1960s created quite an interesting discussion: https://tedium.co/2022/11/09/the-death-of-the-key-change.   Data: - Since the 2000s, barely any key changes at all - Half of the key changes are a shift upwards in the last chorus - Before the 1990s, most songs were in C, G, and D, since then, all keys equally   Conclusions: - Decline probably caused by hip hop and digital music production - Hip hop has little melody, so no need for key changes - Digital production makes it easy to tran ..read more
