Pigments vs. Paints

I would really like to know what pigments are best for making paint yourself & in particular, ones that would be best to buy already made. I know at least one pigment, maybe more, I have purchased & later found out I probably should have just purchased it already done. Watching the Color Notes & seeing the difference between hand mulled & machine ground made a huge difference. I realize it depends on the properties you’re interested in. I prefer a smoother, less gritty paint, so I would rather just buy the paint rather than the pigment. It is nice to buy the pigment if I’m not ..read more

The recommendation has changed, and we will be updating the course soon. Based on recent findings, Golden Artist Colors found that oil paint and oil grounds applied over acrylic polymers (without pigments) have a strong tendency to crack. We are now recommending VAE, PVA, or animal collagen glue as a size for canvas before applying an oil ground. Two coats of these sizes should be sufficient to provide stiffness and oil blocking for the oil ground. This recommendation also applies to polyester textiles. Would this recommendation still apply for polyester canvas, or just applicable to linen and cotton canvases? If not, what would the best practice for polyester be ..read more

This message was posted not by artist, but by the friend of one who bought this piece. At this time we can only guess. I think, artist did not just use “bad” oil paint, but probably the ground underneath was wrong for that kind of application. Many artists jump into gilding, thinking that is not difficult to master. What is your guess ..read more
