just another example of the evil nature of America/capitalism.... for most Americans, me included, we have to work to get health insurance.. I need to work 94 hours a month to get health insurance... In January, I got Covid and missed some time at work... today, when to the store the get some meds, I really need and discovered that my insurance is no longer covered.. I didn't get my hours for the month and thus I have no insurance for the month of March... now keep in mind that one ER visit, the last one ran over 17,000 dollars for 5 hours in the ER... ONE visit to the ER this month and we go ..read more

Society, Government, and Economics • let us take Sammy at his word....

and we do as he asks, which is a genocide of black people and deport all immigrants... now that is to pretend that those two actions don't cause the next civil war because they will, but hay, Sammy isn't an American, so what does he care? let us pretend that a civil war doesn't start, and we successfully kill all blacks, as Sammy wants and we deport all immigrants... now what? the betting money on how long America lasts is, the over/under is 5 years before America collapses... some optimist might say, 10 years before America collapses, but they are optimist... and why would America collaps ..read more

Philosophy • a look at our current world vs the past...

I am reading Ishiah Berlin book, ''The Sense of Reality'' which is a series of essays...and the essay I am currently reading "Kant as an unfamiliar of Nationalism'' and one of the arguments that Berlin bring out is an interesting one and very much in the spirit of much debate around ILP today... the ongoing debate between Sammy and myself centers around one of the ideas of man within nature debate.... One of Sammy arguments is that there is violence and mayhem in the world because of the American idea of multiculturalism and diversity...a dubious proposition at best, but ok...and because Samm ..read more

Philosophy • ART, life and literature

In the ''diversity thread'' I asked Sammy for some thoughts on the ART'S, and he cut and past some nonsense about Dostoevsky, clearly having never read him... which leads me to wonder about the impact that ART and especially literature has on our values and idea's... there have been roughly two schools of thought on literature... one is that literature must be socially relevant... that literature brings us into contact with the social problems and issues of our day.. and sometimes, even providing us with answers to those social problems... for example, Victor Hugo wrote a massive book, ''Les ..read more

this is a continuation of the diversity thread, by other means... the statement that leads me to the creation of this thread is this.. a statement, can't recall who made it, but the statement is: black people are more violent than white people... and that statement is given as fact... but does that statement actually stand up under scrutiny... but more importantly, as we should in a philosophy website, a fact often forgotten around here, we should engage in some discussion about the overall understanding of race, violence, criminal convictions, and our society at large.... despite the outr ..read more

Philosophy • Revolutionize the world

While I wait for a friend to return and help me in this project I'll take some applications. Let me know how you are worthy of revolutionizing the world. Who are you, why do you care (if you didn't care you wouldn't be applying). Tell me one embarrassing thing about yourself that you never told anyone else. Explain Barge's theorem of discounted multiplicities. What makes you smile? What is your vision of truth? At most one or two worthy souls will be picked to help out. Thanks in advance. Edit: 2048, very nice indeed. Statistics: Posted by HumAnIze — Fri Mar 01, 2024 11:43 am — Replies 0 ..read more

As described here, the site will be migrating to new software Monday night around 9PM eastern, which is 2AM Tuesday morning UTC. During the migration, the site will be down for several hours. I'm not sure on the exact time, but I'm optimistically budgeting 6 hours so that our European users can keep up the tradition of browsing over their morning cigarette. If it's not done in that window, odds are good something has gone wrong and it will take more like 12 hours. A few things to know in preparation: Be sure you know your current password, you'll need to log in the first time and email rese ..read more

Science, Technology, and Math • stabilizing the perpendiculars

The question to be posed is: If magnetic is perpendicular to electric, so that they are two different waves, why don’t they cancel each other out, or amplify or magnify each other? And why is there only one electromagnetic spectrum for both of them? with waves… if they are in the same place at the same time, they amplifier each other if they are not in the same x at the same y, they cancel each other out What if they’re smack dab in the middle (perpendicular)? Notice how the north and south pole of earth are not the same as the magnetic south and north polls— and the sun is not barycenter ..read more

Psychology and Mind • Rational and Arational Emotions
I Love Philosophy Forum

I notice that I can choose to feel or not to feel certain emotions. Call these "rational emotions", where one can decide how one feels as a consequence of a chain of reasoning. To be clear, I do not mean suppressing or denying an emotion, such that it broils under the surface, but igniting or extinguishing the emotion as an act will. Other emotions, I don't feel that I can control in that way (even if I can control my actions in response to them). I can't summon them or turn them off, even with great effort. Call these "arational emotions", because they are not subject to reason -- "arational ..read more
