Calling one's mother an ape is very harmful for one. Truth would be: parents have goodness. They even raise apes... So you think the truth hurts in this instance? People who think evil is funny aren't to help, nor are they interested in good. Are you a creationist who believes that evolution is wrong or evil, or are you just being oblique because it sounds deep? Good householder mother received him, had no duty at all, could have abort him, the burden making "blood-sucker". Nobody asked good householder to come, yet others received him. If he thinks that he has rights, then this is ..read more

Ethics and Morality • Re: How much harm is permissible in self defense ?

The usual answer to this question is that actions taken in 'self-defence' should be in proportion with the attack. And eye for an eye, ear for an ear... not even animals are that foolish and seek a way out. No, an "eye for an eye" describes *vengeance*, not self-defence. The former is violent retribution; the latter is protective. So two eyes for the possibility of losing one... as if there is any different in thinking... as if protection could ever harm. Offensive can harm. I'm sorry, but your words don't seem to have anything to do with mine; and they don't make sense to me. Perhap ..read more

Ethics and Morality • Re: Is there such a thing as an innate sense of gender?

Oh, and there is no LGBTQ+ community. They are disparate groups with different problems and concerns. See above for how the some gay people are increasingly concerned about the high numbers of gay people are being "steered" into thinking that they're the wrong gender (rather than coming to terms with the fact they are gay). The whole notion of a LGBTQ+ community is going to explode real soon. Just like other of these silly acronyms that lump together different minority groups as if they all share the same problems. BAME is a classic example (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) that was popular ..read more

We need to learn, not just to panic and close everything down. In this case learning starts with studying the Cass Review. But what has this to do with answering the question we have been set: Is there such a thing as an innate sense of gender? If the question is whether (self-)knowledge of one's sex is innate, the answer is no. Statistics: Posted by Consul — Thu Apr 25, 2024 10:37 pm ..read more

There's a lot there to think about, Gertie. I'd like to read it closely before responding. No worries, I appreciate you taking the time. I'm coming at things from a different angle, but I think if we grasp that Mattering, or having a stake in the state of affairs, is what meaningfully makes sense of the Is/Ought distinction, we can stop worrying about the dead end Objective v Subjective perspective. Once that foundation of what the 'Concept of Morality'is established (as opposed to the physical nuts n bolts of our neurology), it follows that conscious creatures are the types of beings we c ..read more

Discuss "In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All" by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes • Re: As A Christian, What are Your Thoughts on This Book?

This book has been really thought-provoking for me, even as a Christian. It offers different perspectives that I hadn't considered before, and I think it could be a valuable resource for anyone looking to expand their understanding of [insert the topic of the book]. I would encourage other Christians to approach it with an open mind, just like I did. Who knows, we might all learn something new. People actually do not know the power that have to control their perception hence their reality. Once a person matters the act of control over his perception, the person is a true conqueror. Statistics: Posted by Raymonda Onwuka 1 — Thu Apr 25, 2024 10:02 pm ..read more

I agree that Harris' book is a step in the right direction. But I'd like to ask what others make of the critiques of the book by philosophers such as Daniel Dennett, Simon backburn and Russel Blackford. I'm too low status to be able to post links to their critiques here, but if you would like to read these critiques you can just Google the "philosophers name" followed by "critique of The Moral Landscape" and you will find them. The are all accessible and fairly short reads. I'm iffy about getting mired in Dennett's thinking, tho I don't know his position on morality.  Did you hear he's ..read more

I am not an antisemite. However, this has been a six-decade long disaster for the Palestinian people whose land should never have been partitioned. And ever since the partition, the Palestinians have suffered death by a thousands cuts as Israel invades more of what is left of Palestinian territory. It has been a disaster for the Palestinians and it may well end up being a disaster for Israel, too, if/when it's backers in the West can no longer protect it. Whatever happens, the 1.8 billion in the Muslim world (and many in the West) will not forgive or forget Israel's avaricious and cruel destru ..read more

Epistemology and Metaphysics • Re: If the Universe was not Infinite, then my Finite Shoes could not Exist!

There is no "edge" of the universe. Travel as far as you wish and you will never reach an edge. And there is no space “outside” the universe. The universe contains all of space - there is no space and no "where" outside the universe for anything else to exist in. The universe is not some sort of container… Questions for Lagayscienza, Gertie, night912, and Michael_H_ : 1. Isn’t this (Laga's comments above) also true for an “infinite and unbounded” universe? 2. If so, then what convinces you that the universe is “finite and unbounded” instead of “infinite and unbounded”? 3. What makes som ..read more
