Q & A with Tom: Electric massage tools?

Question from a follower on social media: Hi! I love the work of Tom Myers. Could he discuss his views on electric massage tools?  Tom: Thanks for the question! Three levels of answer: 1) I am an advocate for the human hand – for human touch, its skill and its comfort and connection to a beating heart, far above any tool or machine I have ever experienced. The Metaverse might yet produce a superior hands-on treatment, but I doubt it. That said, and given that skilled human touch is often expensive and not always available, let’s go to another level: 2) Using a tool – theraballs and cups ..read more

Intermediate stratum

Intermediate strata is the arthroscopic surgeons’ term for ‘loose fascia’. Add this to Thies’ interstitium, Hedley’s peri-fascial membranes, Guimberteau’s Multimicrovacuolar Collagen Absorbing System, Borden’s Rapidly-Adap[ting Internal Network, or my Biomehcanical Auto-Regulatory System, Or go with the traditional: intermuscular fascia, areolar, adipose, subcutaneous, hypodermis – so very many words for different areas within our singular ‘biome’ of the fascial web. This whole trend of model making is interesting, as is arthroscopic surgery, which has a different point-of-view from tradi ..read more

Acupuncture Meridians and the Anatomy Trains
Anatomy Trains Blog
by Tom Myers

Out on the road again this autumn, I have been asked by many people about the relationship between the acupuncture meridians and the ‘myofascial meridians’ of Anatomy Trains.     Let me begin by saying that I myself know almost nothing about acupuncture, the meridians, or Asian medicine in general. I built / discovered / mapped the Anatomy Trains entirely out of regular western anatomy books like Netter and Sobotta and many others. Of course I saw the parallels, but I did not want to shoehorn my system into that system when I was so ignorant of all the implications, variat ..read more

We are so excited to see Anatomy Trains myofascial meridians posters highlighted in the Netflix docuseries Quarterback! We are thrilled to see Dr. Ann Stark using myofascial release techniques in these photos taken from episode 3 in the series. These principles emphasize myofascial meridians as interconnected fascial lines transmitting force. Tensional integrity distributes load across the body, improving overall performance an ..read more

Q & A with Tom: Ida Rolf and Tensegrity

Question via email from a colleague:  Hi Tom, Quick question. Do you have some reference of Ida Rolf ever talking or writing about Buckminster Fuller and Tensegrity? Tom replies:  Hi back I have seen no writing of hers on Bucky or tensegrity – Jeff Lynn is who I would ask, his historical brain might know of something. To my knowledge they never met, though Bucky did get a session from Jim Asher. In the run-up Bucky resisted the ‘integration’ idea, insisting he’s been taught to ’stand up straight in the Navy’. I never saw Bucky after the session to ask him about it, but reportedly it ..read more

Farewell Hans Flury
Anatomy Trains Blog

We note with sadness the passing of Dr Hans Flury, the ‘first’ rolfer in Switzerland (in quotes, because Ida Rolf was in Switzerland in the 1920’s), at the same time I was the ‘first’ rolfer in England (Ida Rolf was there too, right up until she went to Esalen in the early 60’s).  Hans and I worked together with Robert Schleip and Peter Schwind, and Vandan to get the ‘first’ rolfing trainings in Europe started in the early 1980’s. What a time that was! And what a spirit he was!  Hans was a wonderfully iconoclastic individual. Of course in our school we teach the taking of a careful ..read more
