Abstract Objectives (1) To investigate sex differences in molar wear in known-age Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and, (2) To explore sex differences in body weight and molar eruption timing as factors influencing sex differences in molar wear. Materials and methods Data set I comprises wear scores, ages and body weights of 212 living monkeys included in the 1985 roundup. Data set II consists of molar wear measurements taken on 2D images of 103 of these monkeys' dental remains. Ordinal logistic regression was used to analyze the first data set. General linear models were used to ..read more

Abstract Objectives Isotopic analysis has been proven a valuable tool for reconstructing dietary habits in the ancient world. In this work we examine the evolution of Greek diet from the Neolithic period (6800–3000 BC) to modern times. Materials and Methods We present isotopic analysis results for δ13C and δ15Ν of adult human bone collagen from ancient (Kaiadas in Sparta) and modern populations (Crete), while at the same time we review published results for δ13C and δ15Ν of adult human bone collagen from Neolithic to modern times of Greece. Results The δ13C isotopic values evolve to more posi ..read more

Abstract Objectives To analyze the mitochondrial diversity in three admixed populations and evaluate the historical migration effect of native southern population movement to Santiago (capital of Chile). The intensity of migration was quantified using three mitochondrial lineages restricted to South-Central native groups. Methods D-loop sequences were genotyped in 550 unrelated individuals from San Felipe-Los Andes (n = 108), Santiago (n = 217), and Concepción (n = 225). Sequence processing, alignment, and haplogroup inference were carried out, and different genetic structure a ..read more

Abstract This article presents outcomes from a Workshop entitled “Bioarchaeology: Taking Stock and Moving Forward,” which was held at Arizona State University (ASU) on March 6–8, 2020. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the School of Human Evolution and Social Change (ASU), and the Center for Bioarchaeological Research (CBR, ASU), the Workshop's overall goal was to explore reasons why research proposals submitted by bioarchaeologists, both graduate students and established scholars, fared disproportionately poorly within recent NSF Anthropology Program competitions and to offer a ..read more

Distal fibula morphology of extant hominids and Australopithecus afarensis. Abstract Objectives Recent studies highlighted the importance of the fibula to further our understanding of locomotor adaptations in fossil hominins. In this study, we present a three-dimensional geometric morphometric (3D-GM) investigation of the distal fibula in extant hominids and Australopithecus afarensis with the aim of pointing out morphological correlations to arboreal behavior. Methods Three-dimensional surface meshes of the distal fibula were obtained using computer tomography for 40 extant hominid specimen ..read more
