Summer is approaching, and that means vacation. For me, summer ignites a feeling of euphoria and celebration that was built in during school years, when summertime was a long three-month reprieve from school, a full quarter of the year. When summer came it was like crossing a threshold into heaven. And there were always songs to proclaim the arrival of summer, and capture that feeling of celebration.
We’ll go swimming every day
No time to work just time to play
If your folks complain just say
It’s summertime
Even when I got old enough to work summer jobs, that feeling of summer freedom stuck w ..read more

As I write this, it’s a glorious bright blue day here in our Wilton Woods home office. Spring is upon us! And with each passing day, more and more guests will join us in travels around the globe.
I just returned from Europe where our Tauck team kicked off our 2024 river cruising season in Vienna with Scylla, our close partner for 20 years. We also had the pleasure of spending time with old friends at the Hotel Bristol and Hotel Imperial, as well as with our long-standing family partners at Palais Pallavicini. It was inspirational; the energy and excitement were palpable. Everyone at Ta ..read more

June 6, 1944 marks one of the most pivotal moments of World War II and world history. As we look back on D-Day nearly 80 years later, it’s a moment to reflect, commemorate and honor the events that unfolded, those who fought, and the Normandy area that served as a backdrop for this historic battle.
The invasion itself spanned five beaches along the Normandy coast in northern France – codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword – and involved more than 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 personnel from eight allied countries in a unified effort to liberate Europe from tyranny ..read more

While it may not command the attention and crowds that the Rhine and Danube do, the Main River – flowing through the southern part of Germany – is critically important to the transportation, tourism and cultural heritage of the regions it passes through. It also beckons travelers looking for a more intimate, leisurely, off-the-beaten-path cruising experience by offering its own unique charm and allure. Let’s take a look at just a few of the highlights cruisers can expect on a voyage along the sparkling Main.

Years ago a friend spoke disdainfully about the rising trend of culinary tourism. He was a little jaded, oversensitive to commercialism. When he thought of the “foodie” trend, he imagined an itinerary that bypasses the Colosseum in favor of grabbing a slice of margherita pizza. To him it was part of a depressing trend of dumbing down, going for the lowest common denominator to snag a mass market. But the culinary travel trend has proven him wrong. I have come to see culinary tourism as one of the highest forms of cultural tourism. It can be anyway.
Aw, but you might ask: Is the art of cuisi ..read more

I’m not big on ratings. I feel no need to choose which is best among New York, Paris, London and Rome. What’s the point? At a certain level of fabulousness such comparisons are demeaning. Anyway, those kinds of preferences are personal, and specific to time and place. When I am in Vienna, it’s the center of the universe – and perish the thought of anyone even suggesting any competitors. Then again, when in Rome…
But when someone mentions Machu Picchu, I can barely restrain myself from blurting out that Machu Picchu is probably the most magical place I have ever been. My obsession with Machu Pi ..read more
