If I Had My Choice of Flybridge Cruisers

We did a walkthrough of three European flybridge cruisers to find the perfect match for our needs. Like me, I imagine most of you will, at some point, have played the ‘Fantasy Boat Purchase’ game. This is when you imagine that you have unlimited funds to go out and buy the boat you really deserve! Now we are all sensible people who might not go far beyond reality. We might even see ourselves needing a certain size and type of boat without going as big or as extravagant as possible. In my case, I'm also one of the founders of The Marine Channel, which means I get to do walkthroughs of beau ..read more

The U.S. Coast Guard, with help from the U.S. Navy, recused three men from a tiny atoll south of Guam on Tuesday in what can only be described as a classic rescue scenario. The rescue was initiated by a U.S. Navy submarine hunting plane that spotted the words 'HELP' written in palm fronds on the beach of a tiny tropical island. The Navy plane was searching for three sailors who had gone missing the week prior. The men had left the port of Polowatt Atoll in a 20-foot open skiff with an outboard motor on March 31st. A week later, on April 6, a relative of the three men “reported her three u ..read more

A recent development in the UK has opened the possibility of autonomous delivery boats in the near future. 'Uber Eats for Boats' is already being trialed, but has thus far been hampered by its ability to deliver only to docks. By adding the capability of autonomous boats, boaters who are anchored offshore could enjoy the perks of a fast-paced supply delivery wherever they are. In an article in Marine Industry News UK, a total of 41 winning projects recently won grants during the annual Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) competition. The funds, which total £1.8 million (2.26 m ..read more

The latest Coast Guard published boating accident statistics will shock you. They tell us that there is a serious lack of knowledge when it comes to driving a boat and it is costing lives. Specifically, in 2022, 74.3% of boat driver deaths, were drivers with no formal boat driving education. For boat drivers who have taken a state certification course, the percentage of deaths drops to 13.3%. And for drivers who have passed a Coast Guard or US Power Squadron course, the percentage drops to 1.2%. There is little doubt that it takes more to drive a boat than many boaters believe and taking a ..read more

It's not too often we get a total eclipse of the sun. Well, eclipses in the general sense happen more often than you might think, but a total eclipse of the sun is a rarity. According to NASA, there are at least two solar eclipses per year on Earth, but a total solar eclipse can only happen during a New Moon cycle. Total solar eclipses happen about once every 1-2 years, but what they call 'nearly identical eclipses' occur about every 18 years and 11 days, or every 6585.32 days. This is when there's a nearly complete overlap between the sun and the moon. During your regular run-of-the-mill ..read more
