In this episode: The party dress; picking up threads; a project round up; and the big idea. The High School Art Teacher Dress by Vogue (V1410) And my own version, the Italy-wool party dress, made for Felix and Mark’s wedding. (It’s difficult to photograph garments with all the visual noise in my studio. I’m working on a solution.) I am back on the quest for perfectly fitting Peaky Blinders trousers. I can highly recommend the following books by David Page Coffin: Making Trousers for Men and Women Shirt Making: Developing skills for fine sewing Project Round Up Elm socks are resting, all f ..read more

IN THIS EPISODE: Stash enhancement; hat boxes of joy; the rug of sorrow; knitting memory lane, letting it go. Repeat after me: It is okay to rest. Thank you, past Brenda, for setting up Esther (by Camilla Vad) and Boreal (by Kate Davies). Leftovers from Esther will become Winter’s Fern hats. My Elm socks, below, by Cookie A, in Admiral Hanf. I am loving the stitch pattern. Caveat emptor, these knit up tight. If I were going to knit them again I’d add two repeats of six, and cast on 72. This would also allow the stitch pattern to continue around the leg, instead of stopping at the side. I added ..read more

194 What I did last summer

In this episode: Undone by Cosmo/Cosmo undone; colour blocking that didn’t; a summer romance; a bounty of beautiful sock yarn; packing projects for a journey with no end date; and … … the view from the Stone Cottage! The former owners of the house left us a full basket of wood and kindling, and something else to take the chill off. The sweater that was Cosmo is no longer pining for the fjords. The colour blocking did not work for me. Might have been the yarn. Might have been the colour. Fortunately, I love the shorter length and find it very wearable. Left, the yarn that didn’t work, that ..read more

In this episode: I have more projects on the needles at one time than EVER BEFORE. And I talk about all of them. If there is a podcast with more knitting in it, I’m not sure what it is. Also, we’re buying a cottage. And trying very hard to remain detached until the contracts have been signed. Schneke Shawl is a little bit addictive. Now that I’ve reached the back and forth section of the first rectangular end, less so. Left: the bound off edges of the spiral are at the upper left corner; right: the rectangular section is on the left, with the amount of yarn remaining at the bottom. There are a ..read more

In this episode: The Great Airing of the Stash 2023; hibernating projects emerge, blinking, into the light; revisiting Paint Pan; Against all Odds’ and the Red Edge, plus a veritable torrent of new knitting projects.  The Troublesome Socks are done. They are… okay. They’re flat. And they’re comfortable. I guess I like them, and am happy they’re off the needles because I am FREE! Free to reunite with a few old friends! The Red Edge gets a new button band, and top-down contiguous sleeve cap. I made a little progress on Against All Odds, which was closer to being done than I remember it be ..read more

In this episode: The production line; tiny arms; fussy cutting; the trouble with Esther; another one of those projects; beautifully visible mending; and a chat with Kim Werker, about finding creativity. Massive thanks to Kim Werker for her time, enthusiasm and inspiration. And say hello to Shoshana, the ugly doll who got the ball rolling for Make it Mighty Ugly. Kim’s current project, along with Kate Atherly, is Digits & Threads, an independent, member-supported online magazine about Canadian fibre and textile arts, crafts and industry, published by Nine Ten Publications. In this episode: The style goddess; I Can Make Shoes; the button makes the knitwear (I have always said this); a return to form; Esther; and The Talisman. Kvetching is now free to all! You’ll find it on Ravelry or on Jeny Staiman’s Payhip. I wish I had thought to save the image of my style goddess to share with you. Alas. The Stitching show was fun, if a bit short on yarn. Next year, I’m going to Wonderwool. That said, I am pretty happy with this button. (Left: new button; right: with the incorrect button it replaced. I Can Make Shoes, and so can you. Check them out. Things wot I’ll be doing ..read more

Kvetching

After talking about the mitts at such great length in last week’s podcast, I’m thrilled to release Kvetching, the fingerless mitts pattern created with Jeny Staiman, to Cast On Patrons. Kvetching fingerless mitts are a pattern mash-up of two great knitty.com designs by two wonderful designers: Fetching, by Cheryl Niamath, and Knucks, by Pam Grossman. Both of these patterns debuted in knitty.com in the summer of 2006. Like Fetching, Kvetching features an elegant cabled cuff, a ribbed hand and a sweet cabled detail at the fingertips. Like Knucks, the mitts are worked from fingers ..read more

In this episode: Bias binding; finished objects; crafting chaos; plum blossoms; works in progress; and palette decisions. The level of craft chaos was high this week, but… Lilly’s retro-vibe pinnies are finished! Several knitsibs have expressed an interest in an adult-sized version. I’m still looking, but if you know of something similar, drop a comment, please. The pattern is Bias Trimmed Apron from Little Things to Sew, by Oliver & S, in lightweight linen fabric with bias binding in designer fabrics purchased from this UK eBay seller. Plum blossom is just about the loveliest name for a ..read more

In this episode: Flat socks, knit purl patterns, iteration, procrastination, and Kvetching. This week’s quest is to design some socks that are plain, but not boring to knit. I know. It’s a tall order. On the right, the first iteration has several different diamond patterns in a field of stockinette stitch. I decided it was too busy, and reduced the size of the diamond. On the right, I added some reverse stockinette to the side sections. It’s not as easy to work, and kind of a pain, so I’ve gone back to the original Stockinette for version 3, and I”m going to split the difference on the size of ..read more
