Just edited this and posted it this morning, moments ago. The best part was the thick dense fog that enveloped Lower Twin Lake, this video is the full hike: https://youtu.be/ibpUGOR5F50 On December 3, 2021, I went to Frog Lake Sno-Park, aka the Pacific Crest Trailhead to Lower & Upper Twin Lakes traversing gorgeous Mount Hood Wilderness. I was expecting some snow given that it was Winter and had even brought several kits with me aka snowshoes to decide the right traction control based on the conditions, but much to my surprise there was no snow whatsoever on the Trail. The cyclical weath ..read more

Trip Reports • The other Eagle Creek 4/27/24

We’ve lived in Portland for 30 years and this is the first time I’ve been to the other Eagle Creek near Estacada. In Feb 2020 we attempted to access it from the Douglas Trailhead. But we were stymied by snow and a group of gun shooters near the access point. Yesterday we followed Google maps to the Harvey Rd trailhead fairly easily. About 1/2 mile away it wanted to send us down a gated, private road and some of the road near the clear cut is rough, but still passable in a regular car. We decided to park at the old trailhead being unsure what was down the steep hill and it was fine hiking the ..read more

Good to see you and to meet Kelly for the first time! (Peter’s signs called that section both the “Shy” trail and also the “S?y” trail. I don’t know what he had in mind.) He told me it was a game where you could replace the question mark with any letters to make a new trail name. So it could be "Sly Devil" when overgrown, "Shady Devil" on a hot day, "Slippery Devil" on a snowy day, etc. With all the "devil" themed trails to explore there, I started calling the area the "Devil's Playground" and he enjoyed that! Good to see you again too, Arlo. It's been a while. Thanks for the insight on P ..read more

I hope the rest of us can pick up the slack on his endeavors! Indeed. I went up yesterday and did some cleanup on the Red Shorts Cut. I was wishing I could tell him that his efforts will be carried forward! Statistics: Posted by arlohike — Sun Apr 28, 2024 1:05 pm ..read more

This is a trail that I long ignored. A little 2.5 mile loop did not seem very interesting when there are longer, more challenging hikes with a high reward for the effort on the north side of the Mount St. Helens National Monument. I quickly realized I was wrong when I first hiked it a couple of years ago. The hummocks were formed when large blocks of volcanic material settled out from the eruption landslide, leaving huge, irregular mounds (or hummocks). Initially entirely devoid of life, they have become an oasis of ponds and groves of red alder. The area is home to a diverse wildlife populati ..read more

If the hooting sound you heard was like 5 consecutive jug blows, it is indeed a grouse. I have never seen one, but you can hear them deep in the forest a long way off this time of year. I had a grouse follow me on the Gorton Creek trail… caught a photo…. Statistics: Posted by dmthomas49 — Sat Apr 27, 2024 9:46 pm ..read more
