How the Far Right-Wing Plans to Obliterate More of Our Constitutional Rights
Ms. Magazine » Gun Violence
by CJ Spencer

In the last decade, the Convention of State Action (COSA) has become the fastest-growing Article V movement. COSA advocates are pushing for Congress to call a convention to ratify a number of constitutional amendments which threaten the fabric of our democracy. If states have immediate standing to challenge the constitutionality of any enactments by Congress and the executive branch, the lives of women would be at risk. Political Abuse Stifles Diversity, Report Shows
Ms. Magazine » Gun Violence
by Ruby Edlin
1M ago
In 2022, voters elected the most diverse Congress in history—but that’s not saying much. Congress remains overwhelmingly male and white: Legislators of color make up just 25 percent of the government body, while the overall U.S. electorate is 41 percent people of color. That gap is as wide as it was 40 years ago. One barrier to fair representation is abuse and intimidation—according to a new report from the Brennan Center. Officeholders at all levels of government face this abuse, but the amount of abuse is disproportionately high for women and people of color. ; It’s interfering with their ab ..read more

Will Men Organize to End Gun Violence?
Ms. Magazine » Gun Violence
by Rob Okun
2M ago
It’s been six years since the Valentine’s Day massacre of 14 students and three teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., and gun violence remains as virulent a disease as ever, with regular new outbreaks in states across the country. Like many debates about social conditions in the U.S., too many men remain silent, rarely weighing in, whether the issue is mass shootings, women’s reproductive rights or the climate emergency. What if, in this critically important election year, men organized themselves as men to speak out? The post Will Men Organize to End Gun Violence ..read more

As St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones told Ms., “Men run for office to be somebody; women run to do something.” More and more, women serving as mayors are part of the feminist frontline for advancing equal rights and are leaders on issues of concern to women voters.  As seen throughout history, women mayors focus on feminist issues that many tend to overlook. Let's bring intersectional issues to the forefront, and elect more women mayors to push forward our agenda. The post Who Runs the World? Women Mayors. appeared first on Ms. Magazine ..read more

U.S. Gun Culture Is Killing Our Children—Including My Own
Ms. Magazine » Gun Violence

Six years ago, my beautiful boy was shot in the head at his best friend's house. His friend’s father stored his three handguns and ammunition in a shoebox. We later learned that Ethan's friend, who had just passed the NRA safety course and grew up with guns, had been regularly accessing and showing his teenage friends unsecured guns for over six months. Ethan's death was not an outlier. Over 4.6 million children in America live in a home with access to an unlocked or unsupervised firearm. And one in five children have handled guns in the home without their parent's knowledge. As a result, eigh ..read more

by April Wilkens

These words are being written from inside Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in McLoud, Oklahoma. We are nearly one month into 2024 and I'm nearing the end of my 26th year of incarceration. Why are so many domestic violence survivors like me locked up in America? After all, I’m far from alone.  For years, my ex-fiancé raped, choked, beat and stalked me. On numerous occasions, he even threatened to kill me and my son. People have asked me over the years, “Why didn’t you just leave?” How I wish it were that easy.
