Progress update: Are EU Governments taking whistleblowing protection seriously?
To ensure EU governments are serious about protecting whistleblowers, the Whistleblowing International Network (WIN) joined up with Transparency International to publish a joint report and series of blogs on the progress of transposition of the EU Directive (2019/1937) on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union law - the EU Directive on Whistleblowing - which must be transposed into the national legal systems of all 27 member states before 17 December 2021.

New civil society monitor on the EU Whistleblowing Directive

EU whistleblowing provisions need adjustments in member states
Seven months remains for EU member states to transpose the whistleblower directive into national legislation. The directive as such only offers protection when reporting about breaches of EU law in specific sectors. However, for an individual whistleblower to determine what is a breach of EU law and not national law is a difficult call to make. Member states still have an opportunity to fix this confusion. The directive sets out minimum standards and there is nothing that prevents member states to go further.

Can transposing the Whistleblower Protection Directive be done on time? Maybe, but not at the cost of transparency and inclusiveness
EU governments were given two years to bring their national whistleblowing frameworks in line with the EU Directive on Whistleblower Protection, giving them ample time to involve relevant key experts and other stakeholders in the process of transposition.
