May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and honor the contributions of the AAPI community to American society. Since COVID-19, however, hate crimes against members of the AAPI community have risen and according to a report by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, hate crimes targeting Asian Americans rose by nearly 150% in 2020, with women being disproportionately targeted. These crimes have been fueled by xenophobic and racist rhetoric surrounding the pandemic, as well as long-standing stereotypes and prejudices.

In addition to HB 1240, the Gov. signed HB 1143 to establish a 10-day waiting period and mandated safety training for all firearm purchases and SB 5078 which establishes a pathway for firearm industry members to be held accountable for irresponsible practices.

Washington’s 2023 legislative session is officially over and it was miraculous! This session was the first total return to in-person work since the 2020 pandemic and we brought our boldest agenda yet. EIGHT vital gun violence prevention and community safety bills passed.

Gun violence is a growing epidemic here in the United States. It affects individuals from all walks of life. We are living in a time when we don’t know if our grocery stores, places of worship, schools, movie theaters, concerts, and banks are safe. Alliance for Gun Responsibility celebrates this lifesaving action, years in the making
OLYMPIA, WA – Today, the Washington State Legislature made history by passing HB 1240, becoming the 10th state to prohibit the sale of assault weapons. This victory comes years in the making. HB 1240 was approved 27-21. Additionally, on Friday, April 7th, the State Legislature passed HB 1143 which mandates a 10-day waiting period and safety training for all firearm purchases. OLYMPIA, WA – This week, the Washington House of Representatives passed two vital gun violence prevention bills off the House floor, HB 1240 to prohibit the sale of assault rifles and HB 1143 to mandate a 10-day waiting period and safety training for all firearm purchases. We cannot separate conversations surrounding gun violence from intimate partner violence. 1 in 4 women experiences severe intimate partner violence at some point in their life.

Carmen was the kind of daughter a mom can’t help but be proud of. She was brilliant, caring, beautiful, funny, and musically talented. She dreamt of going to prom, going to college, becoming a medical researcher, and having a family of her own.
