Somewhere on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Sights like this were not uncommon on PEI, though they also did not appear around every bend in the road.  Native black and white monochrome from the Leica M246. The post The Hay in a Roll appeared first on Mark Garbowski Photography Blog ..read more

Prime Lens Experiment – Week 37, 28mm lens  The nXnw 2019 crew stopped here when driving back from Peggy’s Cove. It is a small picturesque spot known as Boutiliers Cove. Besides shooting the scenes on the water, I was drawn to some of the details of the small piers up close. This was captured in native black and white on a Leica M246 monochrome camera. Peggy’s Cove Adirondacks

The nXnw gang and I spent 2 mornings shooting the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse. The first day was rather rainy, overcast and grey. Sadly, the second day was much the same, just a bit less rainy. Each day we also walked through the small fishing village of Peggy’s Cove itself. These chairs are arranged to have a direct view of the Lighthouse, and I suspect this is a popular spot to watch the lighthouse around sunset during the high tourist season. Prime Lens Experiment – Week 20, 35mm lens As I mentioned last wee, in May I accepted a one-week photo challenge on Facebook to post  one photo every day, black and white, my life, no words.  The challenge did not specify that it was necessary to take the photos that week but I did, and folded it into my personal Prime Lens challenge. The FB challenge week week straddled two of my Prime Lens weeks, and so this is the second image (and last) that I am using for both challenges. I never really looked at this corner of my kitchen as a photo opportunity until I saw it that morning with ..read more

2019 Prime Lens Experiment – Week 8  When I saw this I guessed it is a memorial for a deceased motorcyclist who died at this intersection. With a bit of research I confirmed my guess. This was taken on a recent Sunday morning walk around the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn. I am recently returned from this year’s annual nXnw photo trip with several of my photoblogger friends.  This year we went to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, looking for fall color.  We timed it pretty well, which is fortunate because you can never know when the fall colors will pop in advance with any certainty. But when we first arrived we did have trouble finding good red leaves. We saw green, gold, orange and yellow, and reds that were rather pale and dry.  Then things improved as we moved around to different locations, and eventually we came upon this scene. This is ..read more

I finally got around to editing the images I took during the Historic Mill Light Painting Workshop in Lawrence, MA I went to last month. This is a blend of two separate light painting takes: one of the cart and the other of the room.  Thanks to my friends Bob Lussier, and Steve Perlmutter for running a great event. Unless I surprise myself, this will close out my little potato photo project. For background on it read here. I came up with the idea for this image almost immediately.  I knew I had the BB-8 toy, thought about ways to incorporate it, and very quickly realized that a pair of properly sized red potatoes could work very well. I was lucky in that our batch of red potatoes had such a perfectly matched and sized pair. This is a silly little photo in some ways, but I am nevertheless as proud of it as almost any photo I have taken.  Everything — lighting, background, color, subje ..read more

For background on my little potato project read here. When I was brainstorming ideas for this, I thought about doing an image with a fully or partially peeled potato with the peel in the image.  Then I remembered we have this Funko Pop of Alison Hendrix from Orphan Black, and well, the whole thing came together. I do think I might have done better to shoot this on a kitchen counter, but the big snowstorm ended up commandeering my entire weekend and I shot all my potato images during one basement session Monday night. I hope you’ll let me indulge in a bit of silliness and fun.  Last week a story made the rounds about the photograph of a potato that sold for more than $1 million.  I find it, in turns, cool, ridiculous, inspiring, and bemusing. So I suggested to a group of my photographer friends that we should have a potato photo challenge. We’ve had a fair bit of fun with it and created som rather decent images along the way.   It’s all in a private group so I can’t share it but I can post some of my contributions between now and the end of the week. This is my “fine art” potato photo versio ..read more
