5 Minute Sono - Kidney Stones
Ultrasound Podcast
by Jailyn Avila
2d ago
In this video I'm gonna do a much-needed revamp of the kidney stone (aka ureterolithiasis) 5 Minute Sono video that I first published back in 2015! In this video I give you some updated information and some higher quality clips. The way we typically identify the presence of kidney stones using ultrasound is to have a pretest suspicion of kidney stones and then identifying the presence or absence of hydronephrosis. We are typically much more accurate at identifying the secondary findings of an obstructive kidney stone (i.e., hydronephrosis) then we are of identifying the kidney stone itself (bu ..read more

Butterfly iQ3 Unveiled: Core Ultrasound’s Comprehensive Review and Insights, Part 1
Ultrasound Podcast
by Jailyn Avila

I’m so excited to share with you my unboxing of the new Butterfly iQ3.  Watch to see my first impressions! I’ve had the pleasure of working with many ultrasound companies over the past 10 years, both as a consumer and as an ultrasound director of a large academic hospital.  I’ve enjoyed all of the iterations of the Butterfly ultra-portable ultrasound transducer, but I love their third version (the iQ3), the best! They took all of the best parts of the last version (the iQ+) and added features we’re very excited about: Better imaging (especially with the cardiac), programable buttons ..read more

Ultrasound-Facilitated Pain MGMT in the ED
Ultrasound Podcast
by Jailyn Avila
1w ago
Patients with acute pain can be challenging to manage in the ED. This week, I speak with two pain control experts: Dr. Alexis LaPietra and Dr. Katherine Vlasica. They both completed a pain management fellowship at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in New Jersey. Dr. LaPietra is the founder and creator of the Alternatives to Opiates (ALTO) program and the newly formed Pain Management Section of ACEP. Both are actively involved in a multi-modal approach to pain control in the ED, often including ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. This podcast is the audio version of the interview.  If you'd ..read more

I am so happy to share with you our latest video on how to perform an ultrasound guided pericardiocentesis! This video has gone through a few revisions but I think this one is my best one so far (although I do concede that I may be a little bit biased?) this video already assumes that you know how to tell a difference between a pericardial effusion and pericardial tamponade. If you need a review, please check out the YouTube/website for a refresher! Hope you enjoy! ? Connect with Us ? If you want more education goodness, check out the links below! 5 Minute Sono - IVC
Ultrasound Podcast
by Jailyn Avila
3w ago
This week on the podcast we have a new version of the 5 Minute Sono video on the sonographic evaluation of the IVC.  The IVC is not going to primarily diagnose anything (usually!), but instead is used to evaluate the central venous pressure (CVP). If the IVC is plump and not collapsing, it means a high CVP, and if it is small and collapsing a lot, it means low CVP.  This is most helpful when evaluating a patient in shock, as it can help push you towards or away from specific diagnoses (such as septic shock vs cardiogenic shock).  This is actually the third revision of this educa ..read more

Community Ultrasound Pearls with Dr. Michael Macias (from The POCUS Atlas)
Ultrasound Podcast
by Jailyn Avila
2M ago
In this episode, Michael Macias and I chat about some barriers and benefits of using ultrasound in community (non or less academic) emergency departments.  Any place where medicine is practiced should be held to similar standards, and POCUS should be considered standard of care. We discuss a study done at our home institution where we looked at a quite large sample of ultrasounds and various providers to give insight on which exams are common and some potential missed opportunities!  Check out the podcast for more info!  References: Smalley CM, Simon EL, Muir MR, Fertel BS.
