God Causing An "Early Death" for Disobedience, Etc.

Good day, folks! This is my first post, and I've enjoyed many threads here! This forum has been a wealth of information in so many ways. However, I would love to have you all weigh in on a question my wife and I seem to discuss frequently: God causing an "early death" for things like disobedience. I believe God established our birth, when we will become regenerate, and when we will die. I read this throughout Scripture. But in His sovereignty, may He adjust His timing? Take, for example... R.L. Dabney's Systematic Theology - Banner of Truth Edition

I'm trying to track down a physical copy somewhere of Dabney's Systematic Theology. Ideally, I'd like the Banner of Truth edition. Unfortunately, that one appears to be sold everywhere, except for a couple of massively over-priced options on E-Bay. Does anyone have suggestions as to where I might be able to track down a copy of this book? Thank you ..read more

I AM WHO I AM or I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE?

‘I am who I am’ or ‘I will be who I will be’? From the blog of Jeffrey Radon at The Times of Israel blogs.timesofisrael.com Apart from the fact that this is written by an unbelieving Jewish man, does he have a point regarding the translation of God's revelation of Himself to Moses? Should it be translated "I AM WHO I AM" or "I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE"? Do the theological implications change regarding one's interpretation of God's statement ..read more

Johann Heinrich Heidegger on the threefold office of Christ
Theological Forum

The office of Christ is threefold: prophetic, priestly, and kingly. For He became for us “Wisdom” (as Prophet), “Righteousness” (as Priest), “Sanctification” (as King, author of internal holiness and heavenly glory), and “Redemption” (which is executed in the former parts) (1 Cor. 1:30). The natural lack of man, corrupted by sin, also required that very thing. For the prophet removed ignorance, the priest alienation from God, and the king weakness of drawing near to God. For the reference... Read more ..read more

Dominion Over Spiritual Beings
Theological Forum

I'm working through God Has Spoken by Gerald Bray. In his discussion of the early Christian doctrine of creation, he says that early Christians, including the apostle Paul, believed that the dominion given to Adam at creation includes dominion over spiritual beings. Has anyone read any other discussions of this? In other discussions I've read of the creation mandate I don't recall this question even being raised, much less being answered, but perhaps I simply wasn't paying close enough... Question on Rutherford on abstaining from meats

So I was reading this https://quod.lib.umich.edu/e/eebo/A92138.0001.001/1:8?rgn=div1;view=fulltext and from page 70-73, I've become very confused by Rutherford's argument. If I understand him correctly, he's arguing that one should not abstain from eating meat in front of a Jew so as not to scandalize him, but instead it is necessary to eat such meats in front of Jews. So he writes: Conclus. 2. As some things Physically necessarie must be ab∣stained* from, when the... Click to expand... Read more ..read more

Calvin, Berkhof and H.J. Kuiper -- A Comparison

Article 1 Of course, we do not intend to draw a comparison between the three men, whose names appear in the title of this essay. It is our purpose to make a comparative study of their views, their doctrines, their convictions, as clearly expressed in their writings. Neither do we propose to compare their teachings from every viewpoint and with regard to every... Read more ..read more

Romans 5:18-19 -- "one act of righteousness"?
Theological Forum

Studying Romans 5:12-21 today in a fair amount of depth (as much as I can, at least, for not knowing Greek), and I came across v. 18-19: "Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous." To me, it seems like these verses do support the doctrine of Christ's active... Read more ..read more

Is it accurate to say that rejection of a distinct covenant of redemption, distaste for speaking of faith as a condition of the covenant of grace, and the use of federal/testamentary disposition language in the administration of the covenant of grace largely associated with secession ministers/theologians? Were there other distinctives of the Seceders ..read more
