Hearing the word forest, one quickly visualizes green, tall trees, birds chirping, wildlife sounds echoing, trekking, and breathing fresh air. Wildlife Alliance in collaboration with Murals for Cambodia (MFC) organized an opening of “Cardamoms Forever – An Exhibition” to promote protecting and preserving the last standing Forest in Southeast Asia present only in Cambodia – our Cardamom Mountains. During the opening event, we had many University students, and professors, who loved the landscapes, sunrises-sunsets and forests that are in the Cardamoms. These students showed great excitement wh ..read more

In December 2013 Baray and Saranick took their first steps towards freedom. Captive born pileated gibbons from Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center; their parents were likely victims confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. They would go on to become the first of over eight species, and 30 individuals released into the Angkor Archeological Park in our reintroduction program in cooperation with the Apsara Authority and the Forestry Administration over the last 10 years. When we consider the past and think of the animals that would have once called these great forests surrounding the temples ..read more

Cambodia holds the last un-fragmented rainforest in the whole of Southeast Asia, hence it is every individual’s responsibility to preserve this natural heritage. Government Rangers with the financial support from Wildlife Alliance, patrol these protected areas which span a range of habitat types, including rainforests, mangroves, and savannas to stop threats to the landscape. They work in tough terrain and are on call 24/7. Often rangers are all that stand in the way of forests and wildlife disappearing forever. My recent visit to Pursat province proved that not only rangers but the local ..read more

In celebration of Cambodia’s Independence Day, Dr. Suwanna Gauntlett, Founder and CEO of Wildlife Alliance, acknowledged the positive impact the REDD+ project has had in the Southern Cardamom Rainforest. “Our only chance to save the world’s most important rainforests is to preserve what is left. I believe that high-quality carbon forest offsets provide us with the best way to keep the forests standing. Carbon forest offsets are good for forests, good for indigenous peoples, good for wildlife, and crucial for tackling climate change.” For over two decades, Wildlife Alliance has worked in ..read more

On the 21st of March, one of our Cardamom Forest Protection Programme patrol teams interrupted a poacher when they were out on patrol. They saw the poacher discard something in the forest before fleeing so they went to investigate. Imagine their surprise when they found two tiny clouded leopard cubs in a bag on the forest floor. Records indicate these are the first clouded leopard cubs we have ever rescued in over 20 years of operations, and gosh, don’t they just melt your heart?  Read their full rescue story in this blog post. As soon as they arrived at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue C ..read more

In December of 2013 after six months in an acclimatization enclosure our first gibbon pair, Baray and Saranick, took their first tentative steps back into the wild when they were released at the Angkor Archeological Park. Fast forward 10 years and we have now successfully released four pairs of gibbons, which have gone on to have eight offspring between them. This October the 24th we celebrate International Gibbon Day and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than the reintroduction to Angkor of these forest singers, the pileated gibbon. The pileated gibbon (Hylobates pileatus) is an en ..read more

The rescue Pangolins, hornbills, and baby monkeys, unfortunate as it is, these are species that our forest rangers are used to rescuing from poachers. So, when our team set out on their patrol on the 21st of March, they did not expect to find these two tiny fluff balls discarded in the forest after disturbing a poacher who was likely on their way to sell them. At roughly two weeks old, they are the only clouded leopard cubs that we have ever rescued in the 22 years that we have been operating in Cambodia. When they arrived with our expert nursery keepers at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center ..read more
