Managed to pull off a solid internet connection from a slight wide spot in the road called Lordsburg, New Mexico (really sad little town…lots of abandoned buildings). We covered a wide variety of things, including announcing the upcoming debates, April 24th and 25th, in Lafayette, Louisiana, with Catholic Answers apologist Jimmy Akin (sola scriptura, and “How Does a Man Have Peace with God?”). We discussed conversion, anthropology, and more, looking at Ezekiel 36, Titus 2, and even an old article Robert Gagnon reposted about John 6:39. John Owen’s Usage of Thomas Aquinas, Part 4

This is a follow up to Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 in this blog series where I will go through the works of John Owen detailing where he has mentioned Thomas Aquinas. I hope that this series is helpful. In this fourth part, I would like to look at the mentions of Thomas Aquinas in Volume 14 of the Banner of Truth edition of Owen’s works. This volume is titled “True and False Religion”. As I mentioned previously, there are 20 of the 36 works which do not have any mention of Thomas Aquinas (not even in editorial footnotes). And from the other 16 books there are only 36 mentions of Thomas Aquinas ..read more

Just had to make note of the monumental Alabama Supreme Court decision and the issue of “By What Standard” that simply cannot be avoided. Then we looked at some further issues I had forgotten to get to on the last program about claims Trent Horn made and how all of this is so vitally relevant to the direction Roman Catholic apologetics is heading. Important stuff! The post Road Trip Morning Dividing Line appeared first on Alpha and Omega Ministries ..read more

This is a follow up to Part 1 and Part 2 in this blog series where I will go through the works of John Owen detailing where he has mentioned Thomas Aquinas. I hope that this series is helpful. In this third part, I would like to look at two different types of usage. First will be a couple of disagreements in which Thomas is mentioned alone, not in a list of others. Second, there are what appear to be a few points of agreement, one where Thomas is mentioned alone and another among a few others. Also note that these first three posts do not deal with Owen’s usage of Aquinas in the Hebrews volume ..read more

Talked a little about the “He Gets Us” thing, gave a brief report on the Allie Beth Stuckey Show from Tuesday, then dove into the Protevangelium of James and read its narrative of the birth of Christ in light of the defense of this document as containing genuine Christian tradition by Roman Catholic apologists. We then moved on to discuss The Invention of the Inspired Text by John Poirier and his actual goals in writing his book. Don’t know when the next program will be as I will be heading off to Tullahoma next week for the Why Calvinism conference, a debate, etc. Watch the app for announceme ..read more

Back to on-the-road status for the program today! We covered what’s going on tomorrow and in the upcoming days, then looked at a tweet from @Cernovich wherein he demonstrates he has never done serious reading in the topic, and then finished up the hour looking at a key section from Carl Trueman’s presentation (which we began reviewing over the past few weeks). This is a follow up to Part 1 in this blog series where I will go through the works of John Owen detailing where he has mentioned Thomas Aquinas. I hope that this series is helpful. In this second part, I would like to look at a couple of different types of usage that we find. First will be some cases where there is an editorial footnote that mentions Thomas Aquinas. Secondly, there will be a mention of a story that Thomas wrote about. Again, note that these first two posts do not deal with Owen’s usage of Aquinas in the Hebrews volumes. I believe I will begin working through those in part 5 ..read more

John Owen’s Usage of Thomas Aquinas, Part 1

Recently, Carl Trueman has stated the following: “I had a breakthrough on John Owen when I realized how often he cited Thomas Aquinas in his marginal notes in his texts. Struck me as odd.” With this in mind, I would like to begin looking through just how extensive this usage really is, since this is a topic that tends to be brought up often. As a bit of a preliminary, I have been utilizing the epub version of the books of Owen available at monergism.org along with comparing these with the Banner of Truth volumes (which yields 36 total books). This way, you can feel free to look for yourself an ..read more

Head out on Friday (I keep saying Lord willing, and I mean that), so hopefully our next edition will be on the road, possibly on Monday. Played segments from a video from the pastor of “Zootown Church” in Missoula, Scott Klaudt where he repeated a whole string of utterly indefensible falsehoods about the Reformation, Rome, etc., and then played a brief portion of Trent Horn’s second rebuttal in his debate with Gavin Ortlund on sola scriptura, looking specifically at the common error of ignoring the diversity in Rome while focusing upon it amongst “Protestants.” If you would like to help suppor ..read more
