Hey guys I found this page thinking some of you might be able to help. I(21M) have recently been promoted to bar manager at a craft cocktail bar in Portland. While I am extremely young to be in this position I am somewhat of a natural as well as delegate most of my free time to improving in my field. Whether that’s best practices, classic recipes, expanding my pallet, or just general knowledge of the spirits that I sell. Not to act cocky but I’m really good at what I do. In other words It’s not like I’m unqualified for the position.
The bar I work at is working on rebuilding after covid so we ..read more

I have been a people manager for 2 years now. 6 months ago, we hired a junior person to report into me. While she is enthusiastic about learning and has made great strides, her work had several quality control issues which I gave her feedback on - multiple times. She is improving on quality issues but still doesn't give me project updates on a timely manner as requested. She also constantly forgets what is told to her and simply denies ever hearing about it or being assigned the task until proven by showing her an email or a teams chat message. While I grapple with these issues, she connected ..read more

In China, there are many agencies, management schools, as well as companies that coach managers to manipulate employees. An example of this is "Workplace PUA" -- which is using manipulation tactics from pick-up artistry to 'manage' your employees. I know very well that many companies, particularly traditional ones, coach managers to use such tactics. I've seen it in practice from multiple managers.
E.g. never let your reports get too close with each other; remind each of them to distrust the other and have them view each other as competition. This will make it easier for you to control them ..read more

To start, I’m a pretty awkward person. I usually don’t have much to say but I do my work diligently.
Currently, my company is downsizing and my team (team of 4) was told that we would be working under a different manager and that our current manager will be working to build a new team/department. Now, 3 of the people in my team already do a lot of work for this new manager. Me, on the other hand, do work mainly for my current manager so I was pretty upset when they broke the news.
Yesterday, I texted my current manager and asked if I had an option of joining his new team instead of staying wi ..read more

Becoming an EM for the first time is overwhelming, and in most cases, we're uncertain about how to fit into an established team whilst taking charge. We all wonder-
Would I lose my coding abilities due to exhaustive meetings?
Would I be able to keep up with the changes in my software/codebase?
Would I be respected as a manager?
And a whole lot more! It's important to escape some traps (if you want to be a full-fledged manager and not a developer).
Brad Armstrong has listed 8 traps that we need to avoid. Read the article here: https://medium.com/@hashbrown/how-to-fail-as-a-new-engineer ..read more

Need advise about a team leader interview
I hope I'm in the right place to ask this question, but I really need help.
I've been working as a line cook for 4 years at the same restaurant (13 yo to 18) and I've talk to my boss about becoming team leader in the kitchen or kitchen manager. I have a meeting scheduled with all of the managers and some of them warned me of a question that they're going to ask me: If an employe isn't doing something that I asked for, what are the repercussions?
It took me per surprise and I don't really know how to answer it. Every time a situation like this come up ..read more

I really need advice from managers and also employees who have been on the receiving end of the below.
I work in an international company and joined my team 10 months ago. At the time I joined, we were severely understaffed and I was also the only person of colour.
From the get go its been obvious my manager doesn’t like me. Now, I don’t need her to like me but I do want to be treated same as colleagues.
When I called in sick at that time, she would bluntly apologise to the group but it was written in a very cold way. In a way that was COMPLETELY different to how she reacted when a colleague ..read more
