New house, new trees, shrubs and plants...

Hello Folks, Recently got a new house. The garden came with some trees and plants that I am not sure about. One, at first, looks like a northern white cedar. The following: Another one. Is that one ornamental grass? And, last but not least, three large pine trees. I heard that some pine trees produce edible pine (others are poisonous). Does that seem to be one that produces the edible stuff? Are those tree and plants high maintenance... Read more ..read more

French Drain Questions
HouseRepairTalk
by Art Vandelay

I could use a little advice on the installation of a French drain. I live in a small, 8-home cul-de-sac. I live at the back of the neighborhood. The driveway off the main road has a slight decline to it, so all the water ends up in a couple lakes 20-feet in front of my home. This is starting to damage the asphalt road. We have sanitary sewers, but no storm water drains. This is a private road inside city property, so they have no obligations to help here, even though each resident is billed... Read more ..read more

Any GOOD, but free & easy to learn Kitchen (cabinet) design software out there?

We're looking to get rid of our construction grade kitchen cabinets, as well as adding a cabinet to our kitchen island. Looked at a few 'free' deign software options, but they are by the big box stores or Ikea, and things are kind of 'skewed' towards buying from them. There are some others that are kind of difficult to learn or aren't much better than graph paper and a pencil. Some better ones cost $$ or are free to begin with & then cost $$ after a period of time. Hoping to find something... Read more ..read more

How to reinforce shower pan threshold?
HouseRepairTalk

The left rear floor corner is highest (the shower pan touches/sits on the floor), sloping down diagonally to the front right corner (lowest). The front right corner shim is 5/8", the left front corner is 3/8" shimmed, with shorter shims under left middle and right rear corner. The pan perimeters are level and ready for the mortar to be applied to the underside. However, I don't know how to support the threshold flange, especially as the gap below it is a gradual wedge shape. I think that if... Read more ..read more

outdoor faucet is leaking out the handle and faucet opening. Want to replace both washers in the valve. Took off the handle and bonnet/packing nut. Go to unscrew the valve and can't get it out. It unscrews all the way till it gets to the opening. The opening in the faucet doesn't seem big enough for it to fit through. What am I not seeing here ..read more

Main doors not closing tight enough

Hi, My main doors no longer close fully. The deadbolt hits the strike plate edge unless I pull/push them when locking. This also means that an electric lock I have, can't lock automatically, unless I pull the doors just a little bit, rendering it useless Can I adjust hinges somehow, or replace the rubber seal with a newer, thinner one? Best, Tim ..read more

Bird Nest in the deck
HouseRepairTalk

Firstly, I don't consider birds pest, but in many cases a problem; so, I digress... my new place there is a small deck adjacent to the house, in the deck’s “roof” there is a light fixture and right above the light fixture (between the fixture and the ceiling/roof panels) there is a bird nest. The nest is actively being used, two o more birds keep coming and going often. I would like to get rid of it without harming the birdlings that likely are there. Any ideas on how to approach that... Seeking Advice on Slimline Radiators
HouseRepairTalk

Hey everyone, I'm in the process of renovating my home and considering installing slimline radiators for space efficiency. However, I'm a bit unsure about their effectiveness compared to traditional radiators. Do slimline radiators provide the same level of heat output? Are they easy to maintain and install? I'm also curious about their durability and if they're prone to any specific issues. If anyone has experience with slimline radiators or has insights on their performance... Read more ..read more

1930, and times are finally good. Would you run?

I'm not here for lectures from people with money. Of course if I had money, I wouldn't even be doing this, lol. But here's the situation as brief as possible. I bought a small square stucco building on a slab foundation that once was a family store. It was constructed around 1930, and is pretty solidly built. I renovated it completely and it has 3 little apartments. I rented them out and learned all about how hard it is to lease apartments to people. If you have done it, you will know...
