The AI Boogeyman

Most people are trying to ignore the pandemic just past because they feel so foolish about how they behaved.  There was layer-upon-layer of missteps on all levels during that episode all of which we will be paying for a long time to come.  Most commentators focus on the government’s missteps and perhaps malfeasance.  But what about a public that for the most part went into panic and over-reaction mode?  Such enabled the government to take all those draconian measures.  Let’s be honest, we treated that virus like it was the boogeyman.  And now comes AI and given so ..read more

Where’s The Beef?

As I watch, from afar, my former home of Los Angeles County melt down into a cesspool of criminal activity I find myself wondering what is driving people like George Gascon and Geroge Soros.  What is the ideology that drives them to what are clearly non-sensical actions?  Whose legal theories do they read?  What is their vision for criminal justice? And so off to Google I trotted.  And I got bupkis.  A Politico article from 2016 profiling Soros talks about where his money is going, but not so much about why he is doing it.  A 2020 interview of Gascon is full of st ..read more

I hope the conference agrees with that. KM: Well, the vast majority does, but there are some who wanted more. But I mean, when y ..read more

Cheap Entertainment

Sports are undoubtedly an entertainment medium, increasingly so.  And the more we focus on being entertained by sports the more we are losing touch with a lot of important things. I got thinking about this watching the Indianapolis 500 over the weekend.  I am an old Indy guy – I grew up there.  Been to the race in person a dozen or so times in my youth, but since I left central Indiana in the mid-1980’s have been a devoted TV follower.  Now that I once again live within a reasonable drive of the place I hope to return to the track soon.  This weekend’s race was unlike ..read more

Memorial Day Is Not About Abstractions
Hugh Hewitt
by John Schroeder

Too often we approach this day as an abstraction, “Those who died defending the nation.”  That’s quite a few people over the centuries and that is why it tends to get abstract, but we should not let it become so. Each of those people had loved ones and was loved.  Each of those people may have held ideals that made the nation worth defending, but in the end they were not defending those ideals.  They were defending their loved ones and they were defending the person fighting next to them. We tend to forget that we want today to be abstract because it makes it easier to have the ..read more

Describing Character
Hugh Hewitt

In an age driven by tech, character matters more than ever. In the past couple of days, I have written about how it is character that tells us what tech to pursue and what tech to leave alone and how tech is more than simply gadgets.  But just what is character? Of course I would define it Biblically.  Paul once described to Timothy the characteristics necessary to serve in an office of the church – that’s a good place to start to develop a picture of character.  But I can hear people telling me that “My idea” of character, but not a universal idea.  Many churches no longer ..read more

Understanding Tech

Everyone thinks AI is Frankenstein’s monster and it could be.  But why don’t we seem to understand that… …climate models are the same thing?  They are both mankind doing what mankind does, trying to understand and inventing.  Yesterday I wrote that great knowledge must come with character or Frankenstein’s monster is the inevitable result.  The problem is not, nor will it ever be tech – the problem is us. Let’s use AI as an example.  2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the least understood, but best pieces of science fiction ever – probably one of the best movies ever.&nbs ..read more

Just Because You Can Think About It….

In science forming character is a mandatory part of teaching.  The things one learns… Everybody knows the plot of “Breaking Bad” wherein a guy with chemistry skills made better illegal drugs.  Bombs are child’s play to a well-trained scientist, even atomic ones.  The world has barriers to obtaining the proper materials to execute the designs, but they can be overcome if one is diligent.  But the point I am trying to make here is that with knowledge comes responsibility.  As Peter Parker/Spider-Man so famously put it, “With great power comes great responsibility.” These ..read more

John Hinderaker at Powerline is wondering what motivates companies to engage in what he terms “woke captialism.” So, what is going on here? I don’t get it. We obviously are not dealing with traditional assumptions about corporate behavior. These companies are not appealing to a substantial customer segment. Amen to that.  I have some speculations he seems to miss. Generalissimo once explained to me that a caller to a talk radio show is not normal.  Millions listen, hundreds call, that narrows the field significantly.  Think about it.  Who has time to sit on hold?  Wh ..read more

When Using Biblical Language – Please Know What You Are Talking About
Hugh Hewitt

Dr Amos Brown, the vice-chair of California’s reparations task force…’You cannot put a dollar sign on what has been done to black people,’ he added to Fox News. ‘Our sin bill in this nation has been so high, and because of the long years of doing nothing, the interest has grown.’ “Sin bill?”  “SIN BILL!?!?!” So, we’re going Biblical here? The legally ludicrous nature of reparations has been well covered here, and far better elsewhere.  The idea does not even really hold up as a matter of justice.  (I mean come on; do we have any understanding of justice whatsoever in this ..read more
