Trust me, if I could have a magic wand and solve this issue for my clients, I would be the world’s most famous sleep consultant! But truthfully, short naps during the day can take time (and a lot of patience!) to fall in place! Your baby may be able to re-settle themselves throughout the night AND fall asleep independently at the beginning of naps during the day, yet you’re still faced with a nap that lasts only 30-45 minutes. Why is it so hard? Firstly, to reassure you, it is a completely normal and common occurrence amongst babies. (To learn more about short naps, you can read our short nap ..read more

How to dress your child appropriately for bed.

One of my childhood memories from growing up was when I shared a room with my older sister. Much to her disgust (and my delight!), we shared a room until I was 10 years old and she was 13 years old.  When we were younger and our parents came in to say goodnight, I remember asking to be tucked in tight so that no cool air could get under the covers and I would wake up nearly in the exact same position! I was the epitome of being as snug as a bug. My sister on the other hand was the most restless sleep ever! She kicked off the covers almost immediately as she moved around her bed and the ma ..read more

When it comes to kids, the only constant is change! In the first year of your baby’s life, this phrase seems to be on steroids! From a helpless newborn to an active toddler, in only 12 short months, your child goes through this incredible transformation.  What you have most likely come to learn is that infant sleep is not linear. They may take 2 steps forward and 1 step back. There are bumps in the road along the way and many of these bumps can be known as sleep regressions.  Some of these regressions you will notice (a lot!), and some you may breeze through. It ultimately will come ..read more

Short naps: What are they? What causes them? And are they a problem?

You’ve heard it before...sleep begets sleep. But why are long naps during the day so hard to achieve?  Naps are crucial for development and establishing good sleeping patterns overnight. A well-rested baby is much easier to put to bed each night as they are not overtired which generally leads to fighting sleep. Daytime napping issues can however be harder to solve than nighttime sleep issues as the physiological drive to sleep is far less than at night. On top of that, you may be feeling that your whole day revolves around sleep! You feel like you’re doing all the right things but when yo ..read more

When do babies sleep through the night?

Deemed the holy grail of infant sleep, this would have to be one of the most asked questions following soon after the birth of having a baby. If I got a dollar for every time I was asked this question, I would be taking our girls to Disneyland every day and living in a luxurious mansion on the beach! :) Truthfully, the answer as much as I wish it was is not straightforward nor is it a single response! There are also differences in the definition of how long sleeping through the night actually is...some say 6-8 hours, others say 10, or 12. These can also change depending on the age of the baby ..read more

Establishing a predictable, consistent bedtime routine is an essential part of setting up healthy sleeping habits. It comprises of a small amount of activities that both you and your baby enjoy that are exactly the same each night in the same order. Your baby will soon recognize the predictable routine which they will find comforting. It is what signals to your baby that it is time for bed and helps them to prepare for sleep and wind down.  Similarly to most adults, babies thrive on routine. We signal to our own bodies that it is time for bed when we put our pajamas on, brush our teeth, p ..read more

5.18am. This was the early morning wake time that we were stuck on for weeks with little Evie! In a recent group of sleep deprived Moms, I asked if you could wave a magic wand and eliminate the biggest struggle with your baby’s sleep, what would that be? Nearly 1/3 of the Moms responded early morning wakes. If this is you, you’re most certainly not alone! Early morning wakes are easily formed yet some of the hardest ones to break. There is not unfortunately a simple one response answer to get a quick solution as there are multiple factors that can cause an early morning wake.  To work thr ..read more

Sleep and nutrition are a family. They are siblings and they love each other so much. Did you know that? They are so close that when one is happy it makes the other one happy and when one is upset and not doing very well so is the other one. This concept is an important one to remember. There is never one thing we can pinpoint when we are trying to solve an issue. Our bodies are so complicated and magnificent and thus if we start to think about dealing with any issue we are facing with a holistic approach, we are more likely to be successful.  As I mentioned before, one possible cont ..read more
