by conedguy I have bought the necessary books, and then some adventures. But I should have understood the basics before investing. I dread reading the explanation for combat in the rules. Much refers to other stuff, which you have look up. I see player aids with flow charts that could have been written by a hyperactive electrician drawing a circuit diagram. I am not trying to be down on a favourite game for a lot of people. But this an elephant in the room problem for the game, and I have played games for many years. So I am used to rules. And have been a GM, in younger days. Any user-friendl ..read more

by whac3 [N.B.: We have a whole system for playing the game without writing but unfortunately this precludes taking notes.] This past shabbat we ended a campaign my daughter has been running. It culminated in two big battles. Our party had two sorcerers and two monks. The encounter builder kept overestimating difficulty of the encounters. They were fun anyway. In the last, my character lied his way into the big bad's lair claiming he was escorting the rest of the party there because he was paid to. He kept this pretense up throughout. My favorite line that I said was (as I finally attacked the ..read more

by ctimmins Played what I'm sure was a commercially published scenario, and would like to figure out the title. Anybody? 5th-level party passes through magical portal and enters the Feywild Party meets Fairy Dragon who leads them to fey village where "the commander" enlists them to defeat a dragon; some party members receive "fairy blessing" Party travels about a day, fights flying/flaming skull Party crosses wide river, fights water elemental Party travels about a day, encounters scarecrow (construct) Scarecrow acts as herald of the dragon; white dragon appears and attacks Ringin' any bells ..read more

Thread: Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition):: General:: Recommendations for a quick 5e one-shot for about a three hour timeslot

by latindog Hi, I recently volunteered to run some one shot sessions of Root RPG at a local store next month on Free RPG day. I spoke with the owner of the store and we decided that it might be good to have a similar length one shot adventure for 5e in case there is slot with no takers for Root. I am looking for some published adventure that would be fun with a group of strangers using pre-generated characters and would have a little story arc that can be finished in about three hours. The players will basically be walk-ins and could vary greatly in familiarity with the system. I don't want to ..read more
