I have never liked the subclass system in 5E, but it has taken me a while to really understand why. Specifically, it has taken me running Pathfinder 2E to help me to understand why. In light of Pathfinder 2E putting out a playtest for a Warlord-like class, the Commander, I can't help but wonder why such a wildly popular class concept has not been introduced to 5E. I am going to be playing a Kobold in an upcoming campaign going from level 10-20. The character is going to start as a Swashbuckler 2, Ranger 2, Whispers Bard 5, Divine Soul Sorc 1, Her stats at level 10 are S8, D16, C12, I8, W14, CH18 and she has the Fey Touched feat. Feast of Goblyns Feast of Goblyns is interesting, but it's like a train wreck piled upon a train wreck. I stopped reading it after around 30 pages, because it was just a mess. In my mind, I'm like, "well, I can ignore this", and "I can skip all this", and I was left with like 1 out of 30 pages of usable content. That's not even an exaggeration. I had an idea for a loose campaign background and structure and thought it would be fun to come up with the details here collectively. One their very first adventure, the PCs end in possession of something extremely valuable. I'm not expecting a lot of huge changes in the other classes compared to their last UA appearance, just tweaks, but the exception is the Bard because after the last UA reveal where you can pick your spell list/power source, they yanked out the Power Source lists that trait depended on. So now Bard is the big class wild card in the next PHB, and it drives me nuts not knowing what to expect with it. Really it should have been in the very last PHB UA honestly.
