[CC SRD and OGL] Good OGL Product Full of 5e Spells?

The list of spells in the SRD isn't exactly huge, and I don't want to write up 30 spells on top of everything else, so I was thinking I'll get my hands on some OGL products with 5e spells, and see if I can shortcut that part of the project a bit. (note, I'm including at least 2 classes, 3 races, a handful of feats and magic items, and about a dozen spells, already, in addition to the non-mechanical content) So, anyone have any favorites ..read more

With 5E now under Community Commons, WotC is now "just" another 5E publisher -- here's how they can still dominate

I was listening to the Lazy RPG Podcast (@SlyFlourish's renamed Lazy DM Podcast) and Mike pointed out that, in light of 5E being added to Creative Commons, Wizards of the Coast is "just" another 5E publisher and will have to compete in the marketplace against other such publishers. Obviously, this was effectively true before, but the changes in the licensing mean that a large portion of the competitive advantage WotC enjoyed is gone. That said, they still have enormous advantages... Read more ..read more

Creativity?

So the basic question is: What are your house rules for Player Creativity? So this came in related to the new D&D movie trailer. In a scene the Red Wizard casts a Floating Hand spell at the heroes. One of the heroes casts Earthen Grasp and that hand rushed over to block the Floating Hand. It's a fine bit of CGI and in a generic fantasy movie it's just fine. Though really most movies just alter reality to do whatever they want on a whim anyway. Though a D&D movie is a bit different, as... Read more ..read more

What MTG/D&D crossover material would you want to see?

I'm a non-MTG players, so all I know about that stands out to me is Eldraine, as a chivalric/fairy tale setting sounds great to me. But what other MTG content would you like to see WotC release as D&D products in the future? What settings are both appealing and different enough from existing D&D content to make WotC likely to do so? Monster books? Spellbooks? Something else ..read more

Hot Take: Uncertainty Makes D&D Better
E.N. World » Dungeons & Dragons

Specifically, uncertainty in potential results. Swinginess. Random happenings because the dice get a mind of their own. That sort of thing. I have played and like some "story" games, but one thing many of them lack is uncertainty. Their mechanics tend to favor participants being able to say things that become true in the fiction (even if they don't call it that). I prefer when participants in D&D (and similar "trad" games) say what they would like to be the case, and then the dice decide... Read more ..read more

Hi all! First of all, notice that this thread is crossposted from reddit. I had one nice response about the Alexandrian blog. Recentely I had an letdown experience DMing that would have been avoidable if I was a more experienced DM. Nothing serious, but started in me a tought. Till now, I've runned low level adventures, and now my PCs starts having pretty good levels (one campaign 8, other one 10), meaning good spells and good magical items. The good advice of "always keeping under your... Read more ..read more

The other snake in the grass: the Wizards Fan Content Policy

tl;dr there's another Wizards document out there that needs to be stamped out. A heads-up to all who have been following the Open Game License debacle... pay attention to the OTHER potential problem: the Fan Content Policy. Fan Content Policy | Wizards of the Coast Wizards of the Coast Fan Content Policy. company.wizards.com Yes, Wizards/Hasbro have backed down on the OGL and SRD 5.1. That's great! It never should have gone this far, but here we are. However, there is a "back door" that is still out there which can... Read more ..read more
