Are there any really compelling reasons to not use it?
The only version of D&D I haven't played in (or DM'd) is 4e — actually I wouldn't mind giving that a go, but combat seems a bit involved for the age of the players.
If I didn't use 5.24e, I'd just revert to my go-to of 2e (in other words, I'm not interested in BX etc.).

With a few caveat...
1. No modern world passing as fantasy (so no French Laelith or eberon. I like both but our new campaign is Frank/merovingian inspired)
2. Horror welcome but not necessary
3. Isn't setting specific and easy to place
4. No Renaissance setting either
Doesn't need to be free. Ok with paying if it's well recommended.
Really haven't had any luck whatsoever so far
Thanks in advance ..read more

When going through the PH, again, I took a look at the classes and basically rated them cool, OK, and meh.
And I realized something,
Meh
Barbarian
Fighter
Rogue
Why am I meh about those three? Because they have very simple flow charts 1- hit opponent 2- Check status 2a is he conscious Yes, go back to 1 No attack new opponent and restart flow chart. Like where is the cool spell like effects and abilities that can hinder or set up opponents?
Where the BoNS comes in. I really liked how it used the schools to make melee classes really cool. Desert Wind for fast movement and blasts. Devoted Spi ..read more

Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere, but there are ongoing reports that the 'Sigil' virtual tabletop project has been canned.
Report: Hasbro Is Scrapping Dungeons & Dragons's Ambitious Virtual Tabletop
Project Sigil, which has been in the works for years, has purportedly seen active development ended after 30 employees were laid off.

If true, I can't help feeling like we have been here before. this is eirely similar to the fate of the 4e virtual tabletop. I will say that the whole thing, including the monetisation model sounded like an incredibly bad i ..read more

In a fantasy world ravaged by powerful magic, the remnants of civilization now exist as dungeons. Players will take on the roles of "dungeon dwellers" who explore these once-thriving areas to uncover their secrets, navigate challenges, and reclaim what was lost.
Potential locations include, but are not limited to, Aftermath of the Suel Empire (Greyhawk), Plains of Purple Dust (Forgotten Realms) , Athas (Dark Sun), and, if you are feeling particularly adventurous, Dragonmech.
my questions are as follows:
1. where would you put such a game?
2. What would your dungeon PCs be made of?
3. What w ..read more

I was poking through the Al-Qadim products that I have, and between City of Delights and Ruined Kingdoms we get seven of the yikaria with their names and nicknames:
He Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken (the Unspeakable)
He Who Watches and Waits (the Watcher)
He Who Guards Those Who Sleep (the Guardian)
He Who Harvests for Hunger (the Harvester)
He Who Learns to Destroy (the Learner)
He Who Pretends Holiness (the Pretender)
He Who Subverts the Enlightened (the Subverter)
I'd like the collective's ideas of additional names for yak-men, since these have a clear theme and most of them are obviously ..read more

In part because I was inspired by some very good Let's Read threads here, I'm about to start up a new 4e Dark Sun campaign. But as much as I like 4e, I do think it could use with a few adjustments that make it work better for what I have in mind. And hey, why not share with the rest of the class?
Overall, my goal is to make things slightly less fiddly, particularly in the "management" area of creating and leveling characters. Also where possible, to make things fit Dark Sun a little bit better. The houserules should really be seen as a whole. Meaning, some of them feed into each other.

I've got a player who claims his barbarian has exactly 5 words.
This is not true, and is a running bit.
They've been chasing a bunch of bad guys to get back the McGuffin: Dalmat, Sweet Lilith, Clean Eddie, the Void, and the Wolf.
The Wolf is a scary feral dude with a dire wolf. He's going to have 5 words, as a fun riff on my player's thing, but he'll have five words for real.
What should they be?
-Wolf
-Meat (=prey, = target, =weak, whatever)
-Wait (general negative)
-Go (general positive)
-Hungry (general "I want" or "now" or whatever)
Can you give me a better set of words?
Cheers ..read more

OSRIC 3 Launch Party
Get excited about OSRIC 3 on BackerKit - come join!
www.backerkit.com
This is a bit of a place-holder presentation for those who want to sign up early! We will begin sprucing up the presentation and giving out more information when we get back from GaryCon.
OSRIC 3 is a retro-clone ruleset for playing first-edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,* the signature roleplaying game of the 1980s. The style of play is freewheeling and epic, simpler than modern RPGs but with endless depth. First published in 2006, OSRIC was one of the first games that started the OSR (Old ..read more

We've had plenty of threads about what people regards as the best RPG campaigns, with the same names reocurring: Masks of Nyarlathotep for Call of Cthulhu, Enemy Within for WFRP, Great Pendragon Campaign for, well, Pendragon. Etcetera.
I don't see that sort of consensus for D&D (or maybe I just hang on the wrong places) so I am kind of curious about what people regards as the best D&D or D&D-adjacent campaigns - or adventure paths if you want. I'm particularly interested on campaigns featuring some sort of overarching plot, rather than campaign settings or pure location-based sand ..read more
