ITAD Explained From a Recycler’s Perspective. Things You Need to Know.
ITAD is the abbreviation of Information Technology Asset Disposition. This is the overall process by which equipment (not necessarily exclusively electronics) is disposed of when no longer needed by the owner(s). The first fact that those outside the Ewaste Industry should know is that those within the EWaste sector do not consider asset disposition to be Electronics Recycling per se. ITAD is considered to be ‘Free Money’ as opposed to Electronics Recycling which is definitely not free money. This is why the competition for ..read more

I have been reading a lot online about this (and there is a lot out there) and have been struck by what appears to be 2 common threads/assumptions. The first is that all of these articles seem to regard a data center as being some uniform ‘thing’ as in a data center is a data center is a data center. So the first point I want to make is that this is patently ridiculous and a uniform approach is therefore ridiculous as well. Someone decommissions NSA data centers and I can assure you with 100% certainty that this warrants a completely different process to, say, shutting down a ‘pod’ within a da ..read more

When You Dispose of Electronics, What Happens to Your Data?
In my experience, one of the main reasons people hold on to their old home electronics is because they don’t know what to do with the data that even outdated devices can still contain. Even if the device itself is nonfunctioning, the data is still there and, in the right (or wrong) hands, it is still accessible to someone who knows what they are doing.
Certified Data Destruction
As part of our certification, R3EWaste handles all data bearing devices to the NIST 800-88 Standard, “Guidelines for Media Sanitization”. Now the ..read more

3 Considerations for Responsible Electronics Recycling
Nasty data breaches. Environmental degradation. Scandal.
Imagine walking into your boss’s office and having to explain why your customers’ data ended up in the wrong hands because you made a bad choice in getting rid of your computers. Picture the look on your CEO’s face when a pile of used electronics that came from your stores somehow ended up in an unregulated waste dump and is being disassembled and melted down by children. Sounds scary and maybe a bit beyond the realm of possibility, but these are real scenarios that can ..read more
