May 17 is Norway's national day. A day that typically provides a total state of emergency throughout Norway. Kids in Norway learn to pronounce May 17 almost before they can walk. Norway’s National Day is nothing short of a huge event, packed with traditions. If you have never visited Norway on May 17, you have an exotic and wild experience in store. If you are with Norwegians elsewhere in the world you may well also see them celebrating. On this day virtually all inhabitants of Norway are out in the streets. The day is also an opportunity to show off one's bunad, Norway’s traditional costume ..read more

In Sweden and Finland, "Walpurgis Night" is celebrated on the last day of April. The day also happens to be the Swedish king's birthday. As such, it's a flag day in Sweden, meaning you will see the Swedish flag swaying above all public buildings. (Check out the Swedish Royal Military Orchestra playing Abba's Dancing Queen on the King's 70th birthday five years ago below - my favourite Abba tune - I couldn't resist ) The Swedish Royal Military Orchestra played Abba's Dancing Queen on the King's 70th birthday But really, Walpurgis Night has nothing to do with the king's birthday. Walpurgis is an ..read more

Easter in Sweden

Although contemporary Swedes are an urban people, most of whom live in cities or large towns, the vast majority still have one foot in the countryside. If they don’t have any family left in rural parts, they often still possess a holiday cottage there. An agrarian strain runs through Sweden’s self-image: Sweden used to be a nation of strong, sinewy peasants, raised on meat and turnips. Most people agree that festive occasions in Sweden should be celebrated in the countryside. Easter is no exception. Easter is the first extended weekend of the spring, and for many Swedish families this means th ..read more

THREE JOYS OF SPRING AND SCANDINAVIA
Norlii Blog

Guest blog by Joshua Kent Bookman In two weeks, I will be flying from Boston to Stockholm for my quickest trip yet - 24 hours. My impulse was to write - to my boss, to my friends, perhaps to acquaintances - but then I realised that would be unfair. Unfair, or insane. I cannot expect to see everyone, nor can I expect to see everything. But what would give me a feeling of Scandinavia, if all I had was 24 hours? A part of me wants to experience everything at once. Lakes, restaurants, friends. Another part of me is grateful that it’s Scandinavia, in Spring time. My Scandinavian home has taught me ..read more

How to press flowers - and let traditional decorations meet modern design

Right now in the southern parts of Scandinavia, spring flowers such as snowdrops and anemones are popping everywhere, and it's just so pretty. In the April box Norlii members received the Pinch from Moebe Design Studio. The Pinch is a small example of innovative Scandinavian design, combining aesthetics, natural materials, and clever constructions. One of the April extras we offer for Norlii Members is another design by Moebe, which is just as clever: The Frame consists of two pieces of acrylic glass, four lists of untreated oak, and a rubber band. The rubber band both holds the frame togethe ..read more

Balance With the February box, we want to pay tribute to harmony, balance and lagom. While hygge is an important part of the Scandinavian life, I think that beginning of a new year calls for another Scandinavian concept: lagom. Lagom is the Swedish word for "not too much and not too little"; to find a good balance in your everyday life. Lagom is a central part of the Swedish national mentality, and maybe you would like to try it too. Circa Mobile The ingenuity of a mobile is an endless delight, a simple pleasure of watching the life of the decorative structure poised to turn freely in the air ..read more
