Why is it so hard to set goals? Setting realistic goals can be a challenge for anyone, but it can be particularly difficult for those with ADHD. ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an individual’s ability to focus, organize, and prioritize tasks. This can make it difficult to set and achieve goals, leading to feelings of frustration and discouragement. However, setting realistic goals is not impossible for those with ADHD. With the right strategies and support, individuals with ADHD can learn to set achievable goals and work towards ..read more

Depression and I have been together for a long time, and it is possible that it has ben for you as well. The symptoms of depression are so similar to my ADHD symptoms that it can be difficult to see the symptoms creeping up on me until it is far too late. Depression creeps in on me like a fog, swallowing everything that I care about. It makes it difficult for me to do my work, or even to enjoy play. Those feelings of worthlessness and fatigue make me want to just lie down and take a nap. Here are some symptoms of ADHD and depression that can be very similar and make depresssion harder to spot ..read more

How I am learning to ask for help

Being a person who is not only living with ADHD but also several mental illnesses in a trench coat, I have learned a valuable lesson about doing everything myself. One of those things has been learning to ask for help when I need it. It isn’t as simple as it sounds. To ask for help you have to first believe that you deserve it and even further you have to realize you’re in need of help at all. So many of us wait until we are drowning in our situation before we can even consider help. ADHD doesn’t wait to show up and neither should we deprive ourselves of the help we need. Here are some places ..read more

Rebuilding Routines

Routines are one of the main things that clients ask me about. What is the right time of the day to do what needs to be done? Is it better during the grogginess of the morning or the exhaustion of the evening? Is it something they truly desire to do or have they decided to take on something new just for the heck of it? What is necessary and what is not? There are no right answers, but I’ll give you one of mine: routine is a ritual, and the only things that are absolutely necessary are those things in the morning that prepare me for the day in the morning, and the ones that relax me and prepare ..read more

A Word on Neurodivergent Friendships

Friendship seems to be an area that a lot of us struggle in so I decided to write something up quickly to say this: Your friends are there to support and be supported. Over time, the nature of friendships change. It follows a pattern that can be similar to the romantic pattern: we have a great opening friend period with lots of hyperfocus and then those feelings of hyper focus shift downward and people begin to feel abandoned. It’s a terrible cycle and many people struggle with the RSD that losing friendships can leave us drowning in. Over the years, I’ve come to understand myself and how thes ..read more

How I Ended Up Burnt Out

I have been working on my mental health so long I’d begun to feel like I’d gotten complete control of it. Like the trouble was over, and I’d only have to maintain. That’s possible, don’t get me wrong, but I was so sure that I missed the signs. I’d believed I’d put my past mental health struggles in the rearview and I was coasting towards some new land where I’d be free from some of my daily frustrations. Like many people who function in a supportive community role, I’d lost sight of my own need for community and isolated myself from the people I needed the most. If that’s you too, I want to be ..read more

Checking In: How to survive the hospital

As you know (I mentioned it on socials) I have been missing in action these last few months, and I’m here to tell you a little bit of what I experienced. Over Mother’s Day weekend, I became very ill, and I experienced hallucinations for the first time ever in my life. We have some working theories about what caused them, but the simplest answer for right now is that I experienced several issues in a trench coat. Sleeplessness as I prepared an amazing pitch for a book. Emotional pain as some friendships fell apart. Someone accessing my accounts without my permission. You know, normal stuff righ ..read more

The Long Winded History of BGLK

Everyone starts somewhere, and BGLK has a whole story. In 2014, I decided to finally take the plunge on a blog idea I had. And this year I sat down to talk about what beginning that was like. Everything you see here, started with an iPhone 6+ and my determination to make it so that Black people looking to learn more about ADHD had a resource that touched on the cultural element of living with ADHD. And that made for a lot of wonderful moments. Lots of tears, lots of laughter, and lots of work! If you loved this episode, shoot us an email and tell us how you feel. Black Neurodivergent Resources
Black Girl Lost Keys Blog
by René

Being Black and neurodivergent makes finding resources for information, support, and community that much more difficult. With a potential exodus from some of the major platforms, I thought it would be excellent for Black neurodivergent creators to have a resource where there’s a hub for them to be found. The algorithims often don’t favor our content. As a visible creator I wanted to be certain that our contributions don’t get lost in the scramble for new platforms. This is a resource I will maintain as often as possible, if I make some type of error, kindly email me and I’ll gladly repair it ..read more
