Olive pruning. Things to bear in mind

In the middle of the olive pruning campaign, we pause our tasks to provide a summary of  our progress. Following the guidance of our advisor, Rafael Navarro, and drawing from our experience last year, we are currently engaged in pruning and shredding branches, with plans for a pre-flowering treatment to follow. Regarding pruning, we encounter three different scenarios: young olive groves, medium-sized olive groves and old olive groves. Each one needs to be pruned in a different way, which is explained below. Regardless of the age of the olive tree, the following basic concepts should alwa ..read more

Which engine does your tractor have?
Twins' Farm
by

Watching the tractor races on the Engine Age YouTube channel, we wonder about the engines will power each tractor... This curiosity sparked the idea of creating a small compilation showcasing the engines used by various tractor manufacturers, allowing us to compare and see what trends are emerging. It's important to note that this entry isn't intended for technical discussions about engines (that is already done by our friend Helio), but rather to provide a concise summary of the different engines on the market. In the following tables, we focus on engines used in medium and high horsepower tr ..read more

Sales of new agricultural machinery during 2023, in Spain
Twins' Farm

As is the tradition every year, we show the data of the sales of new machinery in Spain during 2023, these data are extracted from the information published by the Ministry of Agriculture (the information is published monthly, you can see this information from here). It is a summary of the most interesting data in our opinion. Overall, the figures are generally worse than in 2022, which they were caused mainly by last year's severe drought. In any case, the lower figure is in line with the general trend of the average of recent years. The number of new tractors sold has decreased to 8,688 (10 ..read more

Rainfall in 2023
Twins' Farm
by

As usual, once a year, we analyse the annual rainfall data for our area and prepare this report to show the results to all of you. These data are very located (La Alberca de Záncara - Cuenca), but we think that the precipitation pattern could be applicable to the central area of Spain (the northern and southern zones have considerably more rainfall throughout the year). Looking at the amount of rainfall throughout the year (495mm), who would thought it was a disastrous harvest year? This year has indeed been the worst we have experienced as farmers (we remember 1995 and 2005, when there was al ..read more

Castilian lentil. Sowing work with the MF 8S.225
Twins' Farm

We started the year visiting our friends Leoncio and Miguel, at the Casablanca farm (San Clemente - Cuenca), the aim was to see the Massey Ferguson 8S.225 Dyna-7 sowing Castilian lentils. We spent a fun afternoon watching the tractor in action... we really liked the tractor. MF certainly has a premium product with 8S Series.  In our area, vegetables pulse crops are already very common and we use them in the rotations required by European aid (CAP). Cuenca is one of the provinces where most sunflower is sown, but in our area (southern part of the province) the sunflower is already a minimu ..read more

Samo passenger seat

A few weeks ago we decided to update the passenger seat of our Deutz-Fahr M600 Agrotron... This is the third time we have changed it in the 11 years that the tractor has been in use, so we decided to look for the best alternative to the original seat, since it is made of plastic and it is not very robust. So, when we searched on the Internet, we found Samo Machinenbau GmgH brand, where we discovered several different seats, which seemed to be very well manufactured. We contacted them to request a new seat and in a few days, the seat was at home... the whole process was very simple. Samo Machin ..read more

Olive harvesting 2023
Twins' Farm
by

After a difficult year for harvesting, where only 10% of the cereal crop was harvested and no pulse vegetables could be gathered, we are concluding a year of hard work and important economic setbacks with quite acceptable results in our olive grove. While certain olive groves yielded have had no production, the younger ones proved the more fruitful with a good yield. In order to achieve these good yields in the olive grove, we have had to perform three main precise and persevering work: proper pruning, correct soil management and appropriate phytosanitary and fertiliser treatments. When these ..read more

Days gone by we could enjoy entertaining day at the New Holland Campus in Peñarubias del Pirón (Segovia). A few days ago, Conrado (presenter of the programme) called us to ask us if we could collaborate with the CyL TV programme called "Agro en Acción", as they were thinking of making a chapter about agro influencers.... For those who do not know “Agro en Acción”, it is a TV programme 100% focused on agricultural machinery. We were delighted to confirm our collaboration and told him that we would participate in whatever he needed. So, the recording we made yesterday, which will be broadcasted ..read more

New Makako-GF677 almond plantation
Twins' Farm
by

Once again, we will analyze different plantations and crops, focusing on woody crops to the detriment of cereals and pulse vegetables. It is true that our favorite woody crop is the olive grove, but, on this occasion, we have chosen the almond tree in order to diversify our farm . We have evaluated different plantation options and we have deduced that the field for this plantation is more favorable for almond trees. So, we are already involved in the cultivation of almond trees and even thinking that if these trees are doing well this year, we probably will expand our farm with more almond pla ..read more
