Knee Replacement Surgery

Today I gave myself a Christmas present I’ve wanted for many years – a day on the ski slopes on telemark skis. It had been many years since I could go downhill on telemark skis. First downhill on telemark skies since many years Up on the hill and the first runs felt really ring-rusty. The knees themselves were not a problem at all, however it was felt in the thighs after a few rides and the balance could have been better. Although I think I have been training, I should have trained a lot more. However, the feeling was wonderful and the happiness complete now at the end of the ski day. With thi ..read more

Time for a trip with long-distance skates
Knee Replacement Surgery

Today is a nice day on the Swedish West Coast with minus 4-6 degrees Celsius. The longing for a trip with my long-distance skates became too great so I had to test. After putting the skates on my old leather Telemark boots, I stood up on wobbly legs. It was probably 4 ~ 5 seasons since I went long-distance skating. The first staggering skates felt unsafe, but after a while the skating flowed well. My right leg feels perfectly OK, while my left leg is a bit behind in rehabilitation. It is in the right part of the thigh muscle that needs to be trained more. After the ride, it felt much like aft ..read more

Tested my golf swing
Knee Replacement Surgery

After my rehab at the hospital this morning I felt for testing my golf swing. A friend of mine we meet at World of Golfs driving range. I don’t like training at a range, golf should be played on a golf course, but it felt like a good test for my knees. I started with just swinging the golf club without a ball and it felt good. I hit the first real golf strokes gently to feel it. It felt perfectly OK. After a few strokes I was able to put some more effort behind the strokes. Then, especially my left knee, started to feel some pain during the rotation. All in all, it felt ok, although I need ..read more

One year since surgery
Knee Replacement Surgery
by Jan H Johansson

Today it is one year since I did my knee surgery on both knees at the same time. You who have followed my blog have been able to see that my rehabilitation has gone very well. The feedback I received from my physiotherapist is that she has never seen anyone picked up strengths and return to full functionality so quickly. It makes me happy and feels like my preparations before the operation and my meticulous training according to the rehabilitation program after the operation have given results. A couple of times she has had to hold me back so I didn’t increase the load to quickly and that I ov ..read more

Today I passed one of my milestones Hockey premiere
Knee Replacement Surgery

Today I passed one of my milestones I have set – Hockey training.  It’s been a year and a half since I played ice-hockey. The season started today with the first training on ice. We were 16 players so there were two teams with 3 substitutes in each team. At first I skated carefully around the rink. I felt a little discomfort, no direct pain though, when I turned with overtaking skating steps, especially to the left. Then I thought to stop, but took a few more laps. It did not get any worse so I thought I would play some shifts on ice anyway. Once the match started, the adrenaline rose ..read more

First cross country tour since surgery
Knee Replacement Surgery

Today it is two months since my surgery. The last couple of days has been really cold in Gothenburg with a lot of sun and some snow. With other words wonderful winter weather. I have been longing for some skiing but I am not ready for down hill skiing or telemark skiing. Therefore I tested my cross country skis on a lake today. Unfortunately the sun wasn’t shining and the wind was really chilly. I skied for about an hour on the frozen lake and the skiing went alright. I took it very carefully because it felt a little rusty. Afterwards my muscles around my knees felt like an ordinary workout se ..read more

5 km walk
Knee Replacement Surgery

Yesterday I met the physiotherapist and we ran my program and tested my mobility. I can almost stretch my leg completely straight now (2-3 degree bend only) and bend to 120-125 degrees – exceeded the goal! This morning the rain was like cats and dogs and the last snow rained away. At lunch the sky burst open and the sun appeared. We went down to the Änggårdsreservatet and had a wonderful walk in the beautiful but windy weather. We walked 5 km and the knee joint does not feel at all. Absolutely wonderful. However, I feel a little pain in the thigh muscles, especially in the right thigh. The ..read more

Five weeks has past since the surgery
Knee Replacement Surgery

Yesterday it was five weeks and two days since my surgery and visited my physiotherapist for test improvements and update of my rehab programme. She tested my bending and it was roughly 115° on both knees. The target is at least 110° and according to doctor that made the surgery maximum possible bending is 120°. I passed the test with a big A! Regarding an update of the rehab programme, we discussed the rehab programme I have had since a long time before the surgery, see picture below. She thought it was an excellent programme and I should start using it. I should start with 1-2 repetitions f ..read more

Tossed the crutches and switch to the ski poles
Knee Replacement Surgery
by Jan H Johansson

The last few days it has been snowing in Gothenburg. The nature is lovely with snow on all the trees. What is missing is the pale winter sun, but you can not get everything. Every day it progresses slowly, even if the pace of improvement is not as fastest as before. But what does it matter when I now walk inside relatively unhindered in stairs both up and down without any support. Yesterday when I took a short walk in the snowfall I used my ski poles instead of the crutches and it was no problem at all. During today’s walk in the beautiful snow-covered landscape, it was a joy to use the poles ..read more
