In June 2023, a Brazilian federal court sentenced engineer Mário Marcelo Santoro to 27 years in prison for the 2018 murder of former partner Cecília Haddad in Australia. Santoro was convicted of aggravated homicide, asphyxiation, femicide and concealment of a corpse, after a surprise confession to the court. .
